however that seems to put you back to the start instead of continuing. I don't see any other way to get back to the story

I'm guessing we're gonna have to play all the side content, to unlock the main content, so we can progress the "story"? Worried there isn't actually a story here.
I don't think this is actually how you're meant to progress to the next level. Please correct me devs if I'm wrong
If bonelab is similar in that regard, then a more freeform non linear format will probably work better as long as there is sufficient content.
