This, the trailer shows you have to roll, its random. There's no protagonists except for the character you choose. So far i'm aware.

the greater majority of players, especially of games like this, are male. thus, it is more of a 'forcing' to play as a female than making the few female boneworks players play as a male character.
And no if you bother to watch the trailers one of the games mechanics is switching between a bunch of bodies (one of which is female) that each have their own unique traits.
