Flashlight/Lantern upgrade?

The upgrades to make your light source for each character seems pretty useless, is there any benefit to upgrading it that is not apparent at first glance?

That upgrade makes the lantern / flashlight shine brigher, so you can see better in dark places while using them. Good for new players who have no clue where to go :)
