The island will start to sink after a short while, so you might miss it if you aren't paying attention.
It was indeed the most frustrating boss fight to figure out. And even after figuring it out, the most difficult to fight of them all.
His attacks are not telegraphed enough so that you know which attack he will do next and you don't have enough time to avoid his attacks while also killing the small enemies that jump around (which you can't hear because f*** giving enemies more sounds) because his attacks happen also way to fast and even the small enemies take multiple hits before dying (makes all your upgraded weapons feel like s***).
One of the attacks this boss does (the wave attack) also seems to be broken and can happen midair so you can't avoid being hit by it because you can't crouch. Being able to quickly spot him again after he's changing his position is also not a thing because of missing audio cues. This really is one hell of an unbalanced d****** fight and no fun at all the way it is currently.
EDIT: More reasons why this boss sucks a** big time:
- he always appears in your back which is an absolute b******* thing to have in a FPS game where you can't see what's happening behind you.
- the big bubble attack that covers a big part of the area during the 2nd phase of this fight makes it sometimes impossible to move because it covers up the only platform that hasn't lowered yet so you are again unable to avoid taking damage from being in the water (why does the water f****** hurt you anyway?)
He actually does have tells for all of his attacks, be it a sound or visual cue, you just need to pay attention. The slimes can be killed in a matter of second with your MP28, or thompson and you can always do this while he is submerging in the water. The only phase where the slimes are even troublesomes is the first one anyway, as for the second and third, you get to kill them on your way to the next arena. In the second phase, the boss doesn't even use some of its more complicated and harder to avoid attacks, so you should mainly concentrate on jumping from island to island, so as not to get submerged in the water, and also on destroying the gas capsules. The third phase is basically phase one, but easier, since he no longer submerges and doesn't summon any slimes for his help, and also, you have a big island to maneuver on. So instead of spouting insults and crying, try to pay attention to what's going on in your screen, or just lower your difficulty.
I watched goodol Pagb666's play of it, they do a good job https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwMW53xqgeM
What I got from it was... the plasma is great for dps'ing on the final stage- if you can get to the 3rd round with plasma ammo you should have it in the bag.
The island thing is ABSOLUTELY DUMB, in every other game of this type the islands will stay surfaced until you get to the area you need to- but this one they are on a timer.
I found you can get a lot of damage in with the shotgun on round 1 - or use the last gun as i found it useless in the other phases.
This boss was my frustration point with the game, my positive review vanished. I found the next boss was more like playing a multiplayer game so was much easier but it seems to be tripping people up.
It can actually happen if you find yourself even slightly submerged in the water. You then usually climb back up by the time he is finished with the animation, and since the attack is always aimed slightly above your head, and your head was lower then expected at the moment when he was initiating the attack, you get hit by it, with no possible counterplay, other than submering into the water again, but realizing that and reacting in time is nigh impossible. Even so, the solution is to stay on the surface. The second phase obviously makes staying on the surface a really problematic task, but he doesn't do the wave attack during it. And even if it happens to you once or twice during the fight, even on expert difficulty, that shouldn't account to any bigger problems, as it takes away like 25HP and 25 armor, which is almost nothing, given the number of health and armor pickups in the arena.
