What exactly is a Frag?

The game doesn't seem to exactly explain what a "Frag" is, and doesn't appear to be a Keyword you can get a description on. Is it just this games term for "kill" or is there a more specific requirement for something to be counted as a frag? I've had maps where the number of units killed was higher than the number of frags so I had a feeling its something more specific than just the number of kills.

I can't say I remember. Some games use it as a term for killing enemies with a grenade (aka fragmentary grenade), but I can't recall if that's the case in MST.

Oh, my bad, i just saw Frag objective. It does mean kill, but usually the mission objective says something like "Marco must 'contribute' to 5 frags," so it means the Marco character must do at least a little bit of HP damage to each of 5 enemies that are eventually killed (doesn't matter if he or another character Offs them), is how I read it.

The mission objective counter will "count off" your progress so the text may update to say "(2 of 5)" and then "(3 of 5)." Once you've completed the objective, the counter will go away in the objective text.

A frag is a kill. Quake term. And it also counts if its a sync kill that doesn't do damage(etc your main attacker kills the target and the sync shoots nothing but still getts the frag count)

Frag is a kill. There are side objectives that require you to kill a certain number of enemies or marked enemy (with red crosshair icon) with a specific character. You can achieve this even if they are part of a sync and even if they didn't do damage during the sync attack.

I'm playing on the switch. This objective of x must contribute to x frags seems to only count when the character uses their turn to attack the target. They can fail to kill and another character finishes them off counts toward the frag. But a kill where this character has only contributed sync damage does not count.

frag usually refers to kills, yes, used in old online fps circles and also used in certain military circles

But, there are also frag grenades. I can see the confusion about frag meaning killing someone, or killing someone with a frag grenade.

"Fragging" was term that started on the Vietnam war, it is WAY older than videogames.

It's because of streaming site and other corpo rules that you don't want to say "kill." Blame them for filling our language with babytalk like "unalive"

I know Frags were related to kills(which I stated in my original post), I was just asking if they were relating to specific kinds of kills since the number of frags listed at the end of a round didn't equal the number of enemies I defeated on a map.

Come on. I love Q3 and QL but expecting gamers several generations past arena shooters heyday to know that is 'old man yelling at cloud' behavior.

Yeah, it's not just a kill because I definitely had Fio participate in more than three kills but I didn't get the bonus for three frags.

From what I noticed, they have to participate in killing them in a single action, you can't damage one guy using your required character and then finish him off with another character two turns later, that won't count. Utilize synergies, or do the opposite of what I described doesn't work, i.e. damage them and finish them off with the required character. I have yet to fail these side missions if I keep an eye on it.
An annoying thing however is using a Metal Slug or the Metal Tank even with the required character piloting it will never count the kills as being performed by the pilot. Hopefully they patch that.

This is not a bug, don't pilot the vehicles with the character you want to score the kills, otherwise the objectives will be baby ez mode to achieve...
