Looks like an easy pass for me.
Then I played Tiger Woods. Remember that game? It was great.
I played the earlier version of this game (2k21), and liked it -- but always wished that it had a 3-click swing, like the others I mentioned.
Now I play this game (3k23). By myself. Online with a friend. Closing in on 100 hours at this point.
This game utterly rocks. It is the best online golf game I have ever played. Easily.
The graphics are great. The physics modeling is great. The choice of courses is massive and great. The 3- click swing has been brilliantly implemented here. Is it "too easy" ? Not at all. How "easy" it is depends upon the settings you choose. It can be made quite difficult, for me at least -- and I'm reasonably skilled.
Every time I look at this game's ratings on Steam I laugh out loud and shake my head. In my opinion, this game should be rated "overwhelmingly positive." The complaints I read about this game make no sense to me at all.
This game is subtle in ways that many might not even notice. Watch the cyber "crowd" -- look at them carefully. They become quiet as you ready to shoot. They move, individually, randomly. They act like real people. It's all remarkably well programmed.
Watch putts lip out of the cup. Watch chip shots damn near go in -- but then bounce off the stick. Watch wonderful putts curve with the terrain and go in when you make a really good shot. Watch a nine iron shot go in from a good distance away, and watch yourself shout with the happy surprise of it. Look at the flowers. The drifting clouds. The intricate shadows.
I haven't spent ANY real dollars on this game apart from buying it initially. It is NOT forcing me to "pay to play." It works very well for me, and I play it regularly online with a friend, and it's only crashed once that I can remember -- and, let's face it, internet variability makes other games crash from time to time, too. Indeed, my other favorite game has crashed MUCH more than once.
This should be Game of the Year. My hats are off to the developers. They've improved their product year after year, and now it is genuinely outstanding. I am appalled by any review of this game that isn't glowing.
No, I'm not related to a developer. No I don't have shares in the company. No I don't hope to get a job with them. No no no no. I just see this game clearly for what it is: a freaking masterpiece!
To make matters worse they have monetised the game so instead of working your way through the game based on skill you now have to pay if you want to progress or better your skill level. Stick with 2K21 if you have it, at least it works and your not paying out to these greedy developers.
I do agree that there are too many, long standing bugs though, especially concerning multiplayer....
The games had numerous technical issues since, well pretty much forever, and instead of polishing/fixing them we get more ways to waste our money until two years later the newest game arrives, everything we bought will become worthless and the cycle of a buggy game and more MTX starts over
With an adequate computer, and practice -- including playing through the game's actual lessons -- I find this game to work remarkably well.
The game is beautiful. The graphics are wonderful. The large number of courses that COME WITH THE GAME (not as pricey DLCs) are enough to keep me happy for a long time. I'm looking at YOU Pebble Beach.
I am NOT finding the game to be particularly buggy. Indeed, for me the game has been nearly bug-free. I remember only ONE crash, and I have a lot of hours into it. (I'm not counting any rage-quitting by losing online players -- that's not the game's fault, after all).
I play online a LOT -- both with private games I set up with a friend -- and now, recently, with matchmaking against strangers.
Playing against strangers through matchmaking is proving to be TERRIFIC.
On "pro" setting the game is NOT easy. It's not easy for the stick-petters (as I call those who use ONE method of game control) and it's not easy for the 3-click kids (as I call those who use the OTHER method). It takes practice. And patience. And, yes, nerve and concentration.
Today, in an online game, some guy tried to trash talk me with a microphone -- calling me a name and telling me I wouldn't sink the putt I was attempting. lol.
Of course, I wasn't angered. I'm sure he's not a bad person. He was just trying to rattle me - about like some football linemen try to trash talk those they are facing, for advantage. Nothing to get too upset about. So I ignored his trash talk -- and beat him.
Satisfying.
Experiences may differ. But this seems to me like a remarkably fine game. If one has the computer, internet connection, and skills for it. And the skills can be developed, I think. After all, I'm getting better. And I'm an old codger. But if you wanna call me "gramps," you'd better bring your A-game. Or at least your B-game. Okay, your C-game might be enough.
Thank you developers. This game is an eagle or at least a birdie.
