Keyboard- can't add food to a recipe and cook

I can only make basic recipes. I click the recipe and hit J, everything works. If I click an addition item to add then J gets locked on adding and removing foods and I can't start cooking. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong as this is a pretty important part of the game so I'm certain I should be able too.

Not sure if you got this sorted, but left-click on your mouse can be used instead of "J" on the keyboard for all actions.

OP, you can't navigate with arrow keys to the ingredients list after choosing an initial recipe?
