Advisor boss fight possible without Xen grenades?

Any way to do that advisor boss fight without having to spam Xen grenades? I tried doing it without them but it felt random. Sometimes the advisor threw a container at me and I could duck into the hole then shoot it when it let its shields down but other times it'd just drag me out.

i just finished the game and didn't use a single Xen granade. so it's possible, just shoot him when he has no shield i guess.

I saw a youtuber do it, they spawn in vortiguants who take down the shields of the advisor so you can shoot at it, makes the boss fight way easier. I've tried without grenades and I also noticed that ducking into one of those holes doesn't make you immune to whatever the advisor throws at you. If you get hit by the corner of an object you're done for.

take as much distance as possible from the container which is about to be thrown and sprint. if you still die randomly, consider save scumming. i do not think there is much merit in doing a zero death run of this boss when it is so repetitive.

i don't really know how the shield works, i just spammed shots. however it worked eventually. would be nice if the devs or someone knowledgeable confirm in this thread if this is a periodic invincibility frame to time your shots around, or something else entirely.

I did the fight in first try with totally forgotten xen grenades.
