an ultrakill fan would say it is so good anyone should try it, but the game took a while to get its current reputation. it was not anticipated or praised so much before a while.
those people who developed and maintained a team fortress classic remake from scratch would love people to understand the fun of speedrunning a ctf map. they strived for some fairly original gameplay even by fast fps standard, yet it has been almost empty for years.
titanfall 2 deserves to be called one of the best recent triple a shooter according to many, yet it got arguably overshadowed by contemporary releases at first.
and here i only limited myself to fast-fps of different origins, so imagine the entirety of gaming. while ez2 is your fun oasis you wish was known by the whole world, many games were for other people. alleged good games not always taking the spotlight for x or y reasons (generally target audience and communication) is common and most natural in this world. ez2 goes by the same rules.
what about other mods? if things like Enderal, New California and The Frontier can make headlines on major news sites, then I don't see why Entropy : Zero 2 shouldn't be able to. sure, objectively speaking, those mods are larger by an order of magnitude, but it's not like original Half-Life 2 takes 100 hours to beat.
there's also the fact that EZ2 is not a standalone title in a brand-new franchise. it's literally the biggest Half-Life game since the last official Half-Life game. there were plenty of projects that tried to fill the Half-Life void (including the many canceled Valve games), but so far Entropy : Zero 2 was the only one that truly managed to do it.
I don't see EZ2 quietly fizzling out into obscurity. the mainstream will catch on in time.

some questionable humor in this video, but an it's an interesting perspective.
Haven't watched it yet, but heard him say on his Gloomwood video that he loved it

for all ik the people playing this game were already into half-life and its modding community as a whole, not random gamers interested in any shooters. maybe you can argue its popularity skyrocketed compared to other hl mods, but that's no sufficient condition to warrant the same on the greater scale.
no one itt particularly argued it would definitely be left aside afaik.
however, i can definitely tell that the game not attracting attention as fast as you hoped is actually most normal. not everyone is sensible to that almost messianic aura you describe (take that as an hyperbole). again most are not even aware of the thing's existence yet.
but is it just Half-Life/Valve fans that play this game? the target demographic of Entropy : Zero 2 is Half-Life fans, that's a fact, and it's necessary to own the original Half-Life 2 on Steam to play EZ2, that's also a fact… but that's not that big of a limiting factor. Half-Life 2 is a classic that's been played and enjoyed by millions, its player base is only a "community" in a very loose sense. it's the same thing as with mods for other games I mentioned earlier.
and not like it matters. all i had to say essentially is that cool games not being on the headline so fast has always been normal in gaming history. ez2 is not particularly unique in that regard at all, regardless of how much it is praised by those who currently know it.
mods receiving notoriety faster exist as well ofc, but that's no general trajectory. reason being, once again, that developing a game well is not all it takes to get it known. extensive communication, relationships and the likes do. either that, or hearsay do the work, which generally mirrors a game's quality but does demand a bit of time anyway.

I have to say, Mr_Icarus's streams were among the more interesting ones – precisely because he goes from such utter frustration to absolute joy over the course of playing EZ2.
