How does the Multiplayer work?

I was wondering how exactly Multiplayer work like does it work like "A Way Out" / "It Takes Two" where there is some type of Friend Pass or use the steam splitscreen or do my friend need to buy it too so we can be able to play together?

Looks like it's a pass-and-play kind of multiplayer where you pass the controller around when you play your character but that's for local play. They said multiplayer is one host player controlling the game and up to seven others can provide input on the choices made. I don't know if there's a mode online where multiple people can control different characters at the same time. Seems like the game is more reminiscent of Until Dawn than the Dark Pictures Anthology games.
