Agent 64: Spies Never Die

Agent 64: Spies Never Die

Cypher system
Cypher system reminds me of the same thing Fzero gx did on the gamecube when it came to unlocking new chapters.

I wouldn't mind replaying in Agent 64 if I didn't die in two hits.
Skyforce does it too and I hate it
The Cypher system not only serves as a clunky way to extend the game’s playtime, but the problem is that it isn’t explained very well at all. The game just didn’t explain how it works... it just won’t let me proceed to the next part of the campaign until I acquire more Cypher tokens. During the game, I came across some purple masks. What am I supposed to do with them? Shoot them? What happens? What does it unlock or activate? In the mission selection menu, I see “1/6 Cyphers.” What does that mean? In Contracts, there are entries labeled “Hint picture”... I’m guessing those are the locations (with masks) I’m supposed to find in the game, right? Also, the first "extra" mission I activated, Arcade Survivor, is too difficult for me... so much so that I almost feel like I didn’t understand the objective. Besides, my playstyle in GoldenEye has been more cautious and passive; I don’t speedrun. And here, the game is forcing me to do just that. And it won’t let me move on to the next part of the campaign without doing so!

So I don’t understand any of this either, and honestly, I’m considering requesting for a refund. This is a real dealbreaker for me, and I’m sorry to say it, but otherwise the game is practically perfect.
So just to clarify:
In addition to contracts, you can also earn Cypher points by completing the missions. You’ll get 1 Cypher point on the lowest difficulty, 2 points for completing the game on medium difficulty, and 3 points on the highest difficulty. This means that if you want to advance to the next part of the campaign, you must play at least one of the three missions in Act 1 on medium difficulty. While this still isn’t ideal (especially since in GoldenEye you could play an unlocked mission directly on any difficulty), it’s no longer a dealbreaker for me.

Nevertheless, I’d ask the author to consider adjusting this system. Or at least explain the whole thing more clearly. I apologize for the confusion in my previous post.

You're forgetting that if you unlocked the level on easy difficulty in GoldenEye, you could only continue on easy. Increasing the difficulty adds more objectives and requires you to explore more areas of the mission. I wouldn't say that playing on easy in GoldenEye unlocked the game because you missed the true experience of the level. So, if the game was locked, you couldn't play it on hard, just like Agent 64 suggests.

The game is faithful to GoldenEye playing at a higher difficulty level rewarded you with what was the true level of the mission.

What I meant was that with GoldenEye, you could launch the game and immediately start the campaign on the highest difficulty, 00 Agent. Here, you have to complete each level on the previous difficulty first. I find that repetitive and not faitful to GoldeEye.

Otherwise, I agree. The game is best on the highest difficulty with more objectives and a higher challenge. But in order to play it, I first have to complete the mission on Easy and Normal.

I don't know what game you're playing, but it's certainly not Agent 64.

I played all the missions, even starting on the highest difficulty, without any problems. That was possible even in the demo, the first version from 2022.
Not a fan of it, for me specifically it don't matter - However you can just take a look at the achievements to see how much of a drop off it is for players playing because of the system.

The reason why Goldeneye and Perfect dark did with the Easy, Normal, Hard difficulties was to include all individuals - casuals to hardcore.

The cypher system kind of punishes casual gamers unfortunately - I can see that the developer does want to keep to faith with the old system, and add in their own ideas, however I feel like the cypher system would be more in tuned with adding objectives at the beginning of the level(the more you do the more points you get), Or using the cypher system to unlock skins for solo/Multiplayer(Like playing the entire game as a solider)

I agree that it penalizes people who want to play casually.

But the thing is, GoldenEye did the same thing. If you completed everything on easy or normal, you weren't really playing the full game, since increasing the difficulty is how you unlock new content in previous missions. Adding new objectives really changed the mission.

Carrington Villa is the best example of this. The mission changed a lot if you played on hard compared to normal and easy. On the lower difficulties, you started as a sniper and had to cover the hostage; on hard, you disguised yourself as the hostage and had to do everything alone without cover.

It doesn't matter, If the game was meant to be played on only one difficulty we would have that difficulty. Plain and simple - You can play Agent from start to finish in goldeneye - You unlocked Aztek from beating secret, and got Egypt for Hard. Having those 2 levels locked after the game ended gave incentive to beat those higher difficulties.

With this game specifically as it stands is saying You are required to beat the game on harder difficulties if you want to see more of the story - Casual gamers are pretty big market, thus if their like "I have to do all of this work to see the end of game... forget it... Refund" Gatekeeping content over skill is a high difficulty strain which kills games -

Rewarding skill players with cosmetics and achievements keeps the hardcore audience happy(Like my example of being able to play the game as a solider or what not, as opposed to the main character) or an extra level at the end of the game. This is why Rareware was geniuses of the craft(That and Nintendo).

Your carrington example is exactly what I'm talking about - Rewarding players with skill as opposed to punishing players who just want to chill and do a normal playthrough.

It clearly states that GoldenEye wasn't designed for casual players the mechanics and intention were for hardcore gamers, and the developer is simply following the mechanics of the original game.

It doesn't matter what you want; that's how the game is. Not doing it that way means not being like GoldenEye.

The sad thing is that the Carrington level was the last level designed by the GoldenEye developers. They left because of the mistreatment and crunch they were subjected to. That's why Perfect Dark's quality drops significantly as you progress through the levels. In addition to the immense pressure of its rushed release, the developers of Perfect Dark weren't treated well.

That's just your opinion, however I am right. Look at how many people are already complaining about the system.

Goldeneye wasn't made for a hardcore audience, It was made for teens - It is a balanced game, from start to finish - This game is not. The system is unbalanced and thus you are going to hear and see non-stop compaints about it.
Yeah NOT a fan of Cyphers. I'm never getting to Act 2.

That kind of thinking is so wrong.. Back then There was no "hardcore" or "casual" thoughts. it was all just gamers. and the market where mainly children/teens. it was made for gamers. and som games back then was waay more hardcore then many of todays games. Another thing to think about is that they was a studio with several people working on it. And this is just 1 dev.
