Customised units are not those setup when starting a new game

So from main menu. 1. Customise the basic soldier 2. Helmet gold trim 3. Weapon to a mace or hammer 4. Shield to gold trim 5. Save new configuration. 6, Start 1 plyr game. 7. Recruit basic soldier. 8. Shows default appearance. 9. Tried it by clicking on the randomisation button and that doesnt appear to work. Any ideas?...
