Hooray! Another mainline Tsugunohi game has graced us, after over a year without one. For those unaware, the Tsugunohi games are famous for their rather copious number of jumpscares and simple gameplay, which always involves just walking left - making it popular fodder for VTubers and other influencers. So, has the hiatus been worth it?

Our story focuses on Kana Sakuragi, a recent university graduate, as she begins her new life in a renovated old house. The owner strangely warns us to not mis-write the name of the house, lest we write a "phantom character" (kanji with no known history). Of course, this happens, and thus begins various spooky events as Kana seeks to discover the truth and find a way to escape the curse that has befallen her. The story is very interesting by Tsugunohi standards, with the story having some clever twists and engaging premise, akin to The Call from Showa (another of the more story-driven Tsugunohi games). The first ending is rather shocking (perhaps the most gruesome imagery in the series), while the true ending feels rather clever. The addition of a dedicated epilogue, akin to The Call from Showa and Supernatural Supermarket, helps the story feel well-rounded and complete unlike earlier entries.

Otherwise, the game is the same as earlier entries, just with more exposition and cutscenes than usual. The visuals continue to improve, with much of the imagery being equal parts uncanny (looking at you, landlady!) and uncomfortable; this is unlike earlier games, where some of the "spooks" looked borderline silly. The game also breaks series tradition by starting with a segment where you move to the right, as well as generally having fewer jumpscares. Gone are the days of walking two feet and being assaulted by numerous jumpscares! That said, none of the jumpscares made me jump (perhaps one or two were mildly startling at best), but much of the game really did have me hooked and on edge.

Overall, this is probably one of the best Tsugunohi games. This game shows that the series has evolved, with newer entries telling more engaging stories combined with fewer "cheap" jumpscares and improved visuals. I'd handily recommend this, alongside Supernatural Supermarket and The Call from Showa, to anyone who wants to experience a short, yet distinctly Japanese horror story.

In my opinion, this was the best Tsugunohi ever made. The balance between the atmosphere building and the scary-(jump) (you can always predict when they come) was perfect. It focused on introducing the characters, the environment, and the tense sensation, so it is a bit more plot heavier than initial games. And for me, it was awesome this decision. Beyond the gorgeous art and good sounds effects that complements really well the plot, it also presented a quick background I seriously encourage to press R after the credits.
I really loved all this game had to offer.

This is my first time playing this game, and I must say I really enjoyed it. It felt like watching a horror movie with a lot of suspense and mystery. There were many things I didn’t know, especially the concept of the 'Phantom Name,' which intrigued me. However, I was really shocked by the ending, and honestly, I felt a bit disappointed. :(
