Clever find and quite interesting - this is an argument for "Manual Saves" which aren't as good as AutoSaves, but at least you can CHOOSE when to save manually...
That's actually part of a guide I wrote recently

THIS HAS BEEN A NIGHTMARE FOR ME, the last three days, and I'm so happy to find this fix! THANK YOU for pinpointing the saves games folder for Windows PC's. I haven't actually TRIED this fix yet, but I so far - see NO claims of this NOT working. Even though it's from LAST YEAR... I can only hope for the best. You'll see an addendum edit to my comment here, if it doesn't actually work.
STRIKING DISTANCE STUDIOS: Are you even aware of this? Why are 200 *KB* save files ... turning into unusable 200 *MB* save files? Please KILL this bug in a prompt UPDATE!
There was also a time when the Continue screen loaded me well back of where I last saved. In that case I waited a day or two and then it loaded me in the right spot.
I'm not excusing the problem, as I feel it should have been fixed with the big performance patch that also changed heal, reload, and dodge mechanics.
I'm just saying sometimes starting a new game and looking in the load menu as soon as you can is also a workaround some have used, but hardly ever gets mentioned.
