Op protagonist that can slap zombies's heads off. * check.
Generic zombie designs. * check
Graphics look bright * check
Third person * check (DS was not as scary as Fear)
Basically everything that action games are.
if something catches you off guard in callisto, you just spam Y to get it off you. after the impossible to fail QTE, the enemy even becomes staggered and open to your counter. they could have done A LOT more with the QTEs and combat in general to make these things less predictable and enemies more threatening
i thought it was a fun game but not very scary and a little too slow at times
if you seen it or want the spoiler, look up smile ending on youtube, you wont be sleeping for days.
I feel the third person perspective doesn’t help. The resi 2 remake did it better. While not scary per say it handled tension and dread a lot better by having you wonder around quietly. It helped build up the next thing that might be lurking around the corner.
More modern examples like Alien: Isolation or Amnesia did horror the best. The former still making me uneasy to this day and at times still makes me jump because the AI isn’t often predictable.
This is more of an action horror and as a result it just isn’t effective at scaring. Jump scares are used far too often and you can see them coming a mile away. It’s just an old dated design of cheap moments that don’t work anymore.
But I think what you say is right. I myself am pretty desensitized. I remember watching Aliens: Resurrection and having daydream nightmares when I was younger. Now I watch them before sleep as a nice reminiscence. So, I think this game can be pretty scary to others. And it's actually the atmosphere that saves the game for me. The rest oscillates between ok, interesting, meh, and horrible tbh :(
Look at it this way:
-Alien: scary horror movie, that can still be scary today.
- Aliens: an action movie with barely any scares but it makes you feel tension, exhiliration etc.
Thats the case with TCP. I wouldnt compare it to Dead Space 1, but Dead Space 2. Less scary and with more action, but still a horror..
Yeah, Smile is easily the best horror film of the year. Great concept, solid monster mechanics, and a great ending. It reminded me of It Follows.
great concept?
how old are you? its a blatant rip off of the The Ring. Which if i remember was a remake of a Japanese horror.
If you are ok with spending a painful 90mn or so and want something actually horrific that came out recently, Speak No Evil is good and every department shines in it. Serious warning: it might seriously upset some people. I didn't feel right all evening and still had a bad taste from it for most of the next day. In a good way. It's not a gore fest or a derpy monster movie (I like derpy monster movies, just saying). If you can't handle Hanneke movies do not watch it, seriously...
