At the beginning you need an energy core or something to open the door, but you can use it to open the other door and get some loot + if you go deeper you'll find a big bath room with loot and enemies
There is no meaningful exploration that would lead to new areas, there is always only one way to go forward based on my experience. There is no meaningful exploration that would open shortcuts since the forks are either self-contained and you have to backtrack or best case scenario is that you go one way, hit the end and the game will let you go through doors that are locked from the other side that end up at the beginning of the fork.
The game does decent job with its level design to push you forward once you are in the pathway via environmental design, lightning and other clues. It is still nearly totally linear experience with optional detours for some loot. This is made worse by horrible checkpoint system that will save your progress just before the fork so when you die in combat encounter on main path, you will have to retread side path again to pick up that loot, which might not even be there because the system is so screwy that sometimes loot does not spawn after restarting from the checkpoint.
