How do you rotate buildings?

I only just started, and it's already causing serious problems that I can't figure out how to rotate building before placing them. Please help!

The 'R' key.

Also you can change house types with the 'B' key

That is correct. Rotating any building was part of the game since day 1, but additional selection of each specific building type was added later per request of community. Another added detail, also requested by players, are the arrow markings when placing the building that shows the building orientation...

Can buildings only be placed on one axis (4 possible directions to face), or is there 360-degree rotation and placement like in Forest Village?

At this point, buildings can be rotated (snap) to 4 possible directions, you're correct. When placing buildings you can also select which model you want (if there are more then 1 available, like with basic housing units for example)
