I have learned this lesson, and it really does not even matter whether previous games in the franchise were good or not.
Games these days rely too much on "the release now, patch later" business model.
Software makers can't be trusted any more to release a quality product at launch.
I do generally agree. I had not pre-ordered a game in years, as you said they are all released in a bad state anymore and patched later. It's just smarter, and cheaper to wait about 6 month's after a game releases for patches and a sale. You get a full product that was originally promised, and it is generally optimized by that point.
However, I did pre-order DW2 because I loved the first one. I have full confidence the dev will finish this game and there will be dlcs down the road. So it is what it is.
Did they say on the Steam page or in any of the pre-release marketing: "This is a development team of one, expect major bugs upon release?"
Nah didn't think so.
The reason I did is because DWU is one of my favorite games and I wanted to support the Dev. I knew the game would not be 'finished' on release day. I knew the development would extend over time with multiple patches and hopefully expansions. DWU is after all the product of multiple years of patches & expansions.
In other words my expectations were realistic.
I hoped the game would be in better condition than it was on release....not for myself but for the Dev and for the game. You only get one chance at a good launch; so I am disappointed how things turned out.
But I am not upset with the Devs. I'm sure the performance issues will be resolved and the AI and game mechanics will be tweaked and in time DW2 will be a stellar 4x game.
Meanwhile I am playing other games....including DWU.
Apparently in 2022 expecting the FULL release of a game to run without crashing regularly, performing reasonably in later game and have properly implemented gameplay systems/options is having "unrealistic expectations".
Give me a break!
You're just beautifully demonstrating how someone can become so emotionally invested in a game and developer they no longer have any semblance of objective viewpoint.
I don't own the game, but I've managed to learn the discipline of delayed gratification and healthy cynicism around new games. More people need to give it a try and stop buying things based on promises and hope because they "just have to have it now".
One thing I do agree with you on, DWU is still a great game to play. I've been enjoying that and will continue to do so until this utter disappointment of a game improves.
I'm surprised that Slitherine released DW2 on Steam with so many issues without having it sit in 'early access' for a while first.
