ok this is really stupid!!! how come we cant hire a guard when obviously 1 guard cant defeat 2 thieves yet game wont allow a 2nd guard to be hired so what use is a guard if he cant beat more than 1 thief...checked research & we dont get to research another guard

click on the guard in the employee menu list and then you can upgrade their gear so they can defeat up to 3 thieves...it isn't obvious, so don't feel bad :)
