Kinda legit, but their complaints go away after their pay soars to around 64 gold or so and you never have to worry about a researcher unless you hire a new one.
For each research point produced in a day, they need 1 gold of wages in a day to have "break-even" happiness. So if they produce 65 research points, they need a wage of 65 gold coins. If they only produce 20 research points, they only need a wage of 20 gold... but if they are at 65 gold, they are going to be super happy that day and gain happiness. But... if your wage is 20 gold, and they produced 65 research points, they will be super unhappy in that day.
Everytime you raise their wage by 1 coin, it automatically raises current happiness by I think 5 points, but in order to maintain or grow happiness, they need to be paid gold equal to or higher than the amount of work they are doing in a day.
It is also why Barkeeps get unhappy faster than waitresses, as they are doing almost 3x the work as them, so they need 3x the wages of a waitress to avoid losing happiness.
