Too easy and very annoying. Switching hosts, hosts clapping, the long introductions, too much time between screens and questions. Really a waste of money. Can't believe it was $30.

Kinda echoing what a lot of the other reviews are saying, this isn't bad by any means it just sure isn't worth 30 bucks.

Recommending on a veeeery deep sale, if you pay more than like 10 bucks for this you're paying too much.

With the absolute abundance of trivia games both free and not out now, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader really doesn't stand out all that much other than the fact that a lot of the questions are, by nature, easy.

I streamed this on Twitch and it was actually pretty fun with my chat and I collectively trying to be as smart as a middle schooler, but the reality is that beyond a few hours, I don't really think this game is all that replayable even with all the questions.

The reason for that is that, also as another review mentioned, everything takes f o r e v e r. The hosts switch all the time, the kids switch, the kids give facts about themselves, and while you CAN skip these scenes, its holding down A on each of them, which means you still spend like 10 seconds waiting to get into the next question even if you ARE skipping all of the animations.

Trivia Crack (god I'm old) was popular because it was rapid fire, and once you started it was more questions right in your face. This game could take up to a minute to get to the question "What is the sum of four ones, nine tens and three hundreds" which is a real question in this game, and that is frankly not particularly rewarding to get right.

Also, the categories are not all built equally. I unlocked 3 new question categories in the first hour and a half that I played as well as 2 students and a few outfits for them. (We'll get to cosmetics and unlockables soon). The foreign language questions were not particularly difficult, and while I do understand the premise of this game, the entire appeal to it is that not everyone knows all the stuff that 5th graders are learning. The only one that kinda tripped me up was any questions where they make you place a marker on a map.

One was where Brown vs. The Board of Education case came from. I thought it was Ohio, chat thought it was Alabama, and it ended up being Topeka, Kansas, go figure. We all knew what it was but no one could tell where it came from (which is also kinda a weird thing to quiz, because it was a supreme court case, but I get it)

Other than that category, even math which I am normally horrendous at was pretty easy.

Again, I totally realize the whole gimmick of the gameshow, but when you are playing a trivia game yourself, a bit of challenge is to be expected, and having 2 cousins around the ages this game is supposed to be pulling trivia from, they have significantly bumped up what kids learn earlier. Stuff I didn't learn in math until like 8th grade is now 6th grade basics. None of that really showed in the game.

Now as far as unlockable stuff and reasons to keep playing beyond enjoying the trivia if 5th grade math is your thing, you can customize your desk, the desk border, your name (with two preset words that you unlock more of as you go) and a little bobble head on the desk. The kids that compete with you get new outfits and you can unlock more classmates, for a total of 10(or 12 I can't remember exactly tbh) instead of the base 5.

You can also unlock a good bit more question categories, which is really weird to me. I think they should just have all the categories open from the start, why do I have to play a ridiculous amount to unlock the actual game thats fun?

Also worth mentioning, an absolutely atrocious cash grab DLC with 3500 more questions for 10 bucks. Why is that not in the base game, come on now...

I played for about an hour and a half, and I will probably come back to this now and again for streaming just to do a couple rounds and have fun. In the hour and a half I played we got through like 4 games without skipping any of the dialogue or anything and then 2 more skipping dialogue.

This can be a fun party game probably, and even solo if you're into it, but even though on a technical level everything with this game is *fine*, thats just it, it is *only* fine. It doesn't really do anything to set itself apart, so I would say get this on a deep deep sale in awhile or just go play one of the free trivia games out there theres tons.

I have refunded it, here are the reasons why:
(To be fair, the fact that I had high expectations for trivia-game with junior school questions is funny, but still, as a fan of the original show and the trivias itself it seemed interesting to me.)

1)The question bank seems too small without the DLC. I played the game for an hour and still had a few question repeats.
2)MAIN REASON - The hosts and especially THE CHILDREN are terribly annoying. I want to smash my screen with a large sledgehammer every time I hear them shouting "YES" or "YAY" and of course, they do it all the time! The hosts are just wooden, I have a feeling that the voice actors have recorded less than 10-15 phrases, not more.

And of course, The price is TOO HIGH. If it was about 20-40 hryvnias ($1.0-1.50) - I wouldn't mind to keep it. But Jeez, not 309 (Around $8,30 in equivalent)

So... I'm on a quest to get 100% achievements in every Trivia game on Steam. This is one of my last games, so I've played a LOT of trivia games at this point. This game is... ok? The trivia itself is fine, although on the easy side. But everything else is just bad; the hosts and kids are annoying as anything, and you can't shut them up. There is SO MUCH TALKING between questions... it takes 8-10 minutes to answer 11 questions solo. Please, for the love of god, just let me answer questions in a trivia game.

I also do not like how the majority of the categories are locked behind grind/progress, making the initial few hours very full of Math and English categories, with little/no Art, Geography, or History. This also means you get repeats early, and less of them later on.

I never watched the TV show, so I have no opinion on how this compares to that, and also no bias for/against it. This game just isn't nearly as good or as fast-paced as other trivia games, like those in Jackbox or Trivia Tricks... if you want trivia, look into those instead. Then, on top of it, this is the most expensive trivia game on Steam (tied with the also-bad Who Wants To Be A Millionaire game). I get that the IP license won't pay for itself... but, man, this game just isn't good enough to carry that price tag. Maybe they shouldn't de-list and re-make this franchise every 5 years, and instead just let it die off.

I'm not going to lie. I had high hopes for this game when it was first announced on Steam. I was a huge fan of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? when I was in college. It was a very good game show and I enjoyed seeing contestants struggle immensely to claim that they were in fact smarter than a 5th grader to win a million dollars.

Overall, the gameplay is relatively solid for a trivia game and somewhat follows the format of the actual TV show, but it does take a few liberties. For example, the Peek cheat allows you to look at the answers of all the classmates instead of just the one who you are currently with. Also, there is no Save cheat for when you get a question wrong. It is replaced with a cheat that allows you to swap out for a new question if you are not sure about the answer. In addition, each question allows you the choice of four subjects and I do like that the game gives you get a wide variety of categories to choose from.

While some of the reviews that I've seen don't like the fact that there are two hosts who rotate after every grade level is completed, I personally didn't mind it, although it amazes me that no one gets whiplash from all of the studio set piece movement that occurs throughout the game. Considering the huge database of questions there are in this game with full voice acting on each one, it makes total sense to have two hosts. Also, I did feel that the balance in question difficulty seemed off. Some of the First Grade questions were downright difficult while some of the final questions were just way too easy.

But the biggest flaw of the game for me was the lack of a money tree from the FOX version of the TV show. You don't get a chance to win a virtual million dollars in this game and instead your success is based on a point structure which helps you unlock classmates and other unlockable items. The Million Dollar Question is replaced with a "6th Grade Question" which uses the same ruleset of no cheats or classmate help allowed.

Now, I would have been fine if they kept the points structure during Study Mode and multiplayer mode, but they should have used a money tree during Exam Mode. Heck, in Exam Mode, a wrong answer immediately ends your game, just like on the actual TV show, so why not use the money tree in this mode? It also would have been nice if the game would have utilized Twitch integration. It'd be interesting to see how you stack up against the rest of the community. I felt these were some big missed opportunities for this game to really shine.

While I admit this game does have some good things going for it, I unfortunately cannot recommend this game unless it's on sale at half off or better. If you're a game show fan like myself who was considering getting this game, be sure to temper your expectations.

It's fun enough, but has a lot of downsides and I don't think it stands out from other trivia games. My two biggest downsides are aspects of the gameplay and the multiplayer options. For gameplay, you aren't able to easily skip over host/student introductions. It's fun the first time, but after that it's annoying an disrupts the flow of the game. I wish there was way to say if you've played before or not, so you can skip over introductions or leave them on if you're playing with a new group. For multiplayer, I really wish that there was remote option to play with friends virtually.

I would really only recommend this for a family with kids, which is likely the target audience.

This is the the known TV gameshow, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader game adaptation, where you have to answer 2-2 question from 1st grade until 5th grade in different subjects, and get the right answer in the 6th grade to show that you are indeed smarter then a 5th grader.

The game's look seems a plastic to me, but I think its acceptable enough. The mood of the game is all right and some of the questions can be tricky too. Also, the game have settings to turn off specific questions, for example US questions or different type ones, like listening or location choosing questions. The game gives you rewards if you achive better results, you can unlock more questions and subjects, also new classmates, who could help you out and they all have different stats in every subjects and there are cosmetics too. The game is easy to play with, and you can play with in couch coop mode.

But I think Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader can be repetitive if you play it more. Even though you get different questions and sometimes different class mates who can share their facts about themselves, most of the voice lines are the same and there are lot of dialogues between questions or any part where the player has to interact, and these makes the game boring. Also, I did saw a few questions which I never knew about it when I was in 6th grade or under it, and the game ask you those. Also, I did played without US specific questions, because I know nothing about it if I have to be honest, however I still got some questions about US literature, which I also know nothing about it, so be vary of this subject, when you pick it and you don't know anything about it... but this is most likely about education, I guess. But what I'm certain of, playing this game alone for a longer period of time, is not fun. You will be all right in a few runs, but doing more will be painful for sure, so get some pals or family members with you.

With company, this game is all right for an hour or two, but get ready to skip some dialogues and you basically get a game, where you have to interact only in it's 50% of the time. If I not pay attention to the price tag, I can still recommend this game to get, but take it under 10€, 30€ is too much for this one.
