Heroes IV was terrible. You really arent missing anything...

isnt it a continuation of the 2D style of heroes 3 before heroes 5 came and made everything look and play radically different?

No. The way they did the factions was atrocious (necro and demon shared a town and you had to choose a path.) But the worst part of it was heroes could be directly attacked and killed as I recall...and once the hero was down the army HAD to retreat to town to resurrect the hero. No matter how high level the hero was a decent size flying or ranged minion stack could one shot him...it made playing the game neigh impossible. I played it for a few hours and went straight back to 3...the ability to wreck the hero directly was just too much and I am glad they removed it.

Buy them on GOG.com they also sell proper complete Homm3 version with 2 expansions and Heroes Chronicles which adds 8 new campaigns to Homm3.
Homm4 had some neat ideas, but was a bit rushed in the end and it wasn't all tested properly, but still has one of the best music and story of all the series (if you're into those)

My favourite part of playing Heroes 4 was having a high level melee hero with max combat skills, buffed by a second hero in the same army with dragon slayer. The melee hero took down a 20 stack of top level units without taking damage, because of first strike.

Felt badass, man.
Well, I started playing the Heroes of Might&Magic from 4, and I really liked it... 5 was really good, but I missed the barbarian faction...(that came back as orcs in TofE) And the specialization of towns was interesting... Some design choices were terrible (see vampires... or unicorns...), some other were better than those of 5 (like the titans...) but overall it was enjoyable, the campaigns I played were really interesting (barbarian and undead).

I loved HoMaM IV, I thought it was quite an upgrade from HoMaM II. Honestly wish it was on Steam so I wouldn't have to look for the old disks somewhere..

Hey you!
See other people saying that they like HoMM4, and they want it on steam?

What can you say in your excuse for them?

That's your reason?

guy clearly doesn't know that in original MM lore demons aren't actually demons they are aliens so it doesn't matter in which city they are since in original MM lore all of this is simulation on a crashed colony ship

Heroes IV was great, imaginative, it had different approaches to some situations, and above all, you could've played the heroes as units. In very advanced stages of the game, you could've had an army of 5 heroes of the same strenght as an army of Hydras, Dragons, etc.. and just 1 hero. Marvelous!

I daresay that's what triggered the bitter whiny autists into hating it :D

I liked all HoMAMs. Some less, some more. Probably III and V the most, and VI and VII the least, as they did some poor choices, but it was still a HoMAM formula.

HoMM4 had terrible balance, easily the weakest castles out of HoMM1-5, awful AI and Potion of Immortality.

4 is my favorite title out of 1-5, but at the same time it's also toxic sludge when compared to the other games. A game being enjoyable ≠ a game being good.

That's an interesting distinction. The kind I seldom see on the discussion forums. Respect.

*Wheezes*

That's why Heroes 4 is so good. You don't see strategy games like this.

I say if game can be broken - it's even better than a good game.
