And it WAS going to be continued in a sequel. The original plan was a trilogy released annually. Yup, Ubi was always this way.
The New BG&E will most likely not be a direct sequel, or is going to be a prequel.
EDIT: But if it turns out to be true, it will be Ubisoft's first ever reboot (soft or not) in their 30 years of making games.

But sure. It was of course intended as a reboot. Sorry, my bad. Anyway, my point is that they are not so much into rebooting everything. Even Rayman Origins and Legends are prequels (or at least were announced as such) not reboots but they sure could be.
It's not a direct continuation, but a reboot/prequel/sequel.
IMHO the story ends with the initial game - cliffhanger & all. Uplay is not worth continuing the story.
