I already activated controller in Steam Options, and it still doesn't work. And I have no such option in game menu. I can only change keyboard bindings and choose if I want to play only with keyboard or keyboard and mouse. Not option to choose controller.
I have there only 4 options: Keyboard, Keyboard Alt, Mouse and Keyboard (2 buttons) and Mouse and Keyboard (5 buttons)... And I just checked and now there is also Xbox controller option, but it was not there before, since game didn't see controller. Even light in controller didn't light up, like it was not connected.... Grrr, strange stuff. Thanks for help anyway.
Also, does the PS4 controller have a light slit at the top of the touch pad in addition to the huge light on the back of it?
No, back then I used generic USB controller. But that should not be an issue, Steam recognize PS4 controller and allows to use it even in games that ware never meant to be used with controller. And here game is acting like controller is not connected. Or rather its doing whatever it wants. Once in options it showed only keyboard settings, then it showed Xbox controller, that option later despaired, and now from time to time it shows Wireless Controller, but it doesn't want to bind half of the buttons. Strange stuff. And yeah, PS4 controller have the light slit, but it's not so annoying as the front one, but on that I just put a sticker, that lower the brightness of the light.
I tried using Steam controller support with this game and, while using my Switch Pro controller, it worked fine. Well, not fine, but it worked to the point that it's playable. Every controller that goes through Steam has its inputs read as a Xbox controller so the specific controller shouldn't make a difference.
In any case, I can't think of many possible issues causing this. It sounds like you're quite familiar with Steam's controller support already but I'd still suggest looking over your controller settings in Steam to make sure everything's in order. Outside of that the only other possibility is forgetting to plug the controller in before the game launches.
I'm sorry I don't have any better suggestions.
And I got no ♥♥♥♥♥♥' clue with this.
The reason I asked is because the PS4 controller was made with built in controller support and games recognize it as a generic directinput controller, which is why my controller just works. But for some reason, they removed this from later controller models and the easiest way to tell which is which is with the light slit. Unfortunately my suggestion of "turn off controller support won't work with you.
I wish I could be more of a help, but I can't replicate your situation so my ability to find fixes is severely limited.
Thanks for trying to help. It must be some kind of In game problem, since controller works without any problem in any other game, or Steam Big Picture mode. It can't even be disconnected, because I am using cable holder, that make it impossible to disconnected cable without taking it apart. For supposed Director Cut, this game is more like Content Cut edition. No International Dubs beside big 5, can't find option to turn on subs anywhere, and controller support is doing whatever it wants (It now works on Wireless Controller setting, but hell now for how long)

I don't care what "Real" pc gamers use, I use Ps4 controller. And game don't have much to say, it's going through the Steam, that does support any controller. So the problem is not in type of controller, but in the game itself.
I have tried this, I'm using a Gamesir Controller and it works perfectly fine/automatically on the Master chief Halo Collection but no matter what I do it doesn't work for Assassin's Creed.
The game does not natively support controllers officially on Steam, so we usually would recommend trying to use a Microsoft-style controller like a modern Xbox controller as usually it's the controller that works best with Windows.
You may be able to tweak some settings however in Steam to get this to work >>
Make sure the controller is connected to your PC and recognized in Steam > select the game tile > select the Steam options cog > Properties > Controller > select Disable Steam Input
Next, in the games menu, select options > customize controls > then choose the controller
-Ubisoft Support
I am using a PS5 Controller and that seems to have fixed the issue. Steam really should fix this though given how most people play Assassin's Creed on consoles and the PC system controls are very confusing.
