How was I caught?

I had completed dozens of jobs and had a 400ghz gateway. I had max version of log deleter and tracer and monitor bypass.

I gained access to a bank account without getting traced and reported the balanace to complete my contract. My first connection was always InterNIC and always deleted my bounce and authorization logs.

I created a dummy bank account through my dozens of bounces and logged back into the account I reported the balance of - there was a lot of money in the account. I disabled the proxy and transfered money to my dummy bank account and deleted the transfer log from the rich bank account. I deleted my logs from InterNIC.

Then I was caught some minutes later.

What did I do wrong?

I didn't see you mentioning removing the transfer logs from the "dummy bank account". So far, I see you bouncing through InterNIC, hacking the bank, removing one statement, leaving the other in the dummy account, and removing your InterNIC log. In this case, the incriminating log was in the dummy account.

I frankly have no idea,but try hacking a dude with a recent balance transfer, I got 40000 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ credits from a balance transfer account,bought highest level gateway,decked it out with 200 gz processors (8 of them) and got 6 speed connection with security and I still have money leftover

Yeah I'm still not sure how I was caught but I managed to hack a bank in a new game. Got 1.2 million lol.

I'm not even bothering with missions as I'm now the #1 ranked agent and way ahead of the story.

just remember always run threw interNIC, wipe your bouncing logs, when hacking someones bank account and you transfer it over to yours delete the log in there account, and your account i usually start a new game within 10-20 mins have trace a recent transfer steal it all end up with like 3-4 mill and wipe all knowledge threw interNIC and the bank records, then games just too easy after that always (ALWAYS) have your motion sensor running if it starts to beep or flash gateway nuke instantly and rebuy everything =) never been caught ;)

They never tell you how you get caught, I have no idea how you're supposed to figure it out

I loved this game, I played it before it went to steam, but I always got stuck on a thing like this one (like a gamebreaker bug). I always lost the game on a bank job too. I did what I have to do, they didn't able to trace me, I deleted every log points towards me, even on the gateways I used, there was literally no trace left to find me. As a failsafe I even nuked my server and rebought everything, still few minutes later I got caught. Still no clue since then.

Does the game tell you at any point how to clean your tracks? Like without a single hint about how this works, it doesn't even feel like a puzzle

I can tell exactly how one is caught. The statement has an account number that can be linked back to you, as the player.

As for clearing your tracks, its not specifically stated I think. The tutorial might mention something, but I haven't ran it in the longest time. Clearing your log track is tantamount in this game and I've stolen money from several bank accounts without ever getting caught. That was once I figured out the trick and now I can work fast enough to steal from two accounts, maybe even three.

I would highly recommend that anyone save up the money to buy the best version (I think its v4.0) of the Log Deleter. That completely wipes the log entry, no trace is left behind with it. Your first bounce should always be InterNIC, as that is the quickest server you can crack, and quickly remove logs from. I always delete my logs from the server I hack, and at InterNIC myself, so I'm able to steal millions upon millions of credits to get what I need quick.

Oh, and to find those valuable bank accounts, look for missions where you have to trace an unauthorized transfer.

If anyone is interested, I'm thinking of recording various videos as tutorials for Uplink. The only thing I can't go into detail with are LAN's because they are randomly generated. However, my videos would only cover the main missions, not how to do other things like the stock market, finding secrets, or anything. I already found probably the biggest secret in the game by accident the other day.

I've played this game a long time, personally, as well, both Uplink and Onlink. If you find anything that you seem to be unable to talk about, let me know. I can't capture video, but I can at least lend a hand.

The IRC's normally empty. Most of Onlink's community is a ghost town, with the old regulars checking in periodically and Miah still popping in once in a blue moon to post updates. Pretty sure he's busy with school stuff still, and I haven't seen anything from Tycho in a really long time. Will have to make a new account again and start being active once more. My old Ferrous Moon account was lost when they did all of their migration.....
