Uplink OS and Linux
Hi there, i just installed unlink and saw that there is a mod out there. So i downloaded it, followed the steps in the readme for the steam version, and low and behold when i click play in steam i get the unmodded uplink.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix that, or does it just not work on Linux/steam, because the basegame has no problem running

what mod, what readme, what steps
Kurogane79 Nov 13, 2019 @ 10:39am
what mod: Uplink OS 104 Gold for Steam (downloaded from Moddb

what readme: the installation guidelines that come with the mod.

What steps:
--------------------------------
II. INSTALLATION
--------------------------------

1. After downloading the corresponding version of the Mod,
unzip it into a place of your choice.

2. Go to Uplink's installation folder
STEAM version (common):
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Uplink
GOG version (common):
C:\GOG Games\Uplink
a. Copy the contents of the Mod's zip file into this folder.
b. Go to the "users" folder.
c. Back-up & move/delete all the files here (saves are not
compatible, unfortunately).

3. Now just run UplinkOS.exe and your ready to start
hacking!
NOTE: On the STEAM version, you may have to run the game
from the STEAM interface or it might not work, in this
case you'll have to rename UplinkOS.exe to Uplink.exe.

did you rename the mods replacement executable to the originals name? steam runs the program by its name so renaming is essential
Kurogane79 Nov 15, 2019 @ 6:17am
yeah i did rename it, but its the same result with, and without the renaming....
seronis Nov 15, 2019 @ 6:00pm
so you deleted the original exe and the mods copy of the exe has the originals name? if you did that and the files are in the right place then its IMPOSSIBLE to not see a difference. Stating 'same result' 100% means you didnt do that.

no i cant find an exe file in the base installation, alot of bins but not a single exe file. the only exe file in the whole game folder shows up AFTER adding the mod. so there is no deleting of exe files

the game cant run from the start without an exe as the exe _IS_ the game. you're in the wrong directory

-edit-

Here is view of the default install of Uplink after the game has been run once and immediately exited.

Here is what it looks like after installing UplinkOS. I renamed the original exe first.

Now just rename UplinkOS.exe to merely Uplink.exe and the game runs via steam. If you dont see all the files listed then you are not in the uplink install directory

I had this installed on a non-steam version, but just downloaded and installed here and can confirm it works just this way.
Make sure you are looking in the correct folder, assuming you didn't change the installation you can follow the path in that readme, but easier to just click properties and open it from Steam.

The image(s) seronis shows should be what you see in the ...common/Uplink folder.
You don't need to delete the original .exe, I just renamed it to something like Uplink(orig).exe but that's up to you.
After renaming the UplinkOS.exe to simply Uplink.exe (make sure casing is the same) it should launch from the Steam interface. Also note saves do not work between the base and mod.

yeah in the Windows version of the game, you have a .exe if you install it on linux you dont. the base game works just fine on linux, that is why i asked if the mod is incompatible with linux?
seronis Nov 22, 2019 @ 11:39am
UplinkOS is a windows mod. So I am assuming you are running the windows version of uplink via wine. If you're not then of course a windows program (uplink os) will not work on linux.

The mod is perfectly functional on linux IF you are modding the windows version of the game and running via wine

Did you manage to make it work?

for me the game (modded version) starts, but after the first menu I get an error:

0024:err:module:import_dll Library Steam.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\gighi\\.local\\share\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\Uplink\\UplinkSteamAuth.dll") not found

Nothing worse then trying to play a great game but neither the developers nor the modders are illing to share the source code or build linux bins for us players, the best thing to do is make a new hacking game thats realistic, and no I don't consider that hacky Arcade hacking game Hacknet to be a valid successor to Uplink.
