Tips to get better?
I'm struggling in almost all levels, any tips to play better besides ambush?

Try to be silent at all times - use silenced weapons. Try to stay out of sight, even if this means walking just 4 or 5 fields at a time. Observe the enemy movements and move your soldiers only when the enemy can't see them. Stay out of places which can be reached by the enemy from two or more entrances. It's best to concentrate your team in a place, to which only one door leads - then you can take out the enemy one by one. Try to have one soldier stand in an open door and other soldiers shoot through the open doors - then close the door and fall back. Use grenades - so prioritise skills which reduce APs for throwing grenades and increase the weight your soldiers can lift. This is crucial because it lets you get heavy vests, heavy weapons and grenades and still walk quite fast. And have at least one soldier with a sniper rifle and the special skill with double damage. Don't waste time and skills on melee and knives. I never use them because before you get to the enemy, you'll be mowed down :)

I'm repeating some of what znds said but here are my observations:

Thin out the enemy first. Spend time taking down one enemy at a time so that when you do have to make noise, you aren't assaulted but a ton of bad guys.

Stealth (the skill) will help you get into position without being noticed.

The enemies get tougher and better than you, so trying to go in with guns blazing will ultimately fail. Be patience and work your way into a given map tactically.

Mobility is key. Having fast-moving units should be a priority.

You don't always have to kill all the enemies. If you can meet your objectives, just move out.

All units should have silenced weapons.

Take advantage of height. Shooting down at your enemies gives you an advantage.

When your units do nothing on a turn, they get +2 APs for the next turn. Try to have 12 APs for all units just before a round when you want to do an assault of some kind.

Other than that, I dunno what to suggest. Play the game a lot in standard mode so you can restart the missions, play them multiple times and find a strategy for each mission that works for you. Then try hardcore mode once you are familiar with the maps and missions.

Good luck!

If you doing blitz 2 or 3, you lack cash, you can't get everyone a rifle or a sniper
Since commanders now exist you can buy nothing but a sniper but im talking about the older versions.
all you need is just a army knife and melee combo, then get as much speed as you can, also you want your damage high enough for a 3 hit kill.
Also a sniper takes too much skill points, you need the critical shot which is 5 points(2+3) not including that you need lvl1 shooting, you also need stealth which is another 3 points if your character doesn't start with running level 2.
