I think that's basically it. There is no "lock" icon/animation. It just goes for where you are pointing the camera at. If you cancel the support (press fire button again) before it hits, it goes for the last point you were targeting.
I was referring to a light in the bridge right near where you activate cruise missiles. Its tooltip is "Target Lock". Sounds like its another non-functional UI thing.

It only lights up when the system is currently performing a support strike, that is, when the gun is firing or a missile is currently being launched or guided from a camera (I think? Hard to test in singleplayer).
There's no way of locking a cruise missile onto a specific target, which is a shame.
