Silly question but how do I leave the starting area?

Hi, Anyone that can give me some tips how to loose the agro of Owls & Spiders? The Owls keep their agro on you for long and trying to hide does not seem to work, even hiding in gnome houses did not loose them.. The spiders keep attacking, thought i could kill them with like an axe but did not seem to hurt them a bit. Would love to have some 'hide meter' in the game, like some thief games have.. But would love to know the mechanics for now on how to loose owls & spiders.....

I noticed this after walking over one of those luminescent flowers that are supposed to give you superior running speed. and then realised that that it may be unrelated to that. Anyway anytime I press the left hand mouse button while carrying nothing in my hands, my left hand emits a source of light with sound effects. Does this have any effect on dangerous folk and creatures, I wonder or is this just magic light in case I lose my lantern....

I have noticed this and think while it improves the feeling of realism, it will make things tougher. I find that they disappear after use, and now need to explore further afield to find more or find alternative food. Like Carrots...
