Especially since this game doesn't seem to have cool super weapons...
Where are the bio-engineered super soldiers? Super-heavy tanks? Giant mechs? Instead we get what... a friggin ball bearing.
I remember finding the Yuri's Revenge floating disc nonsensical when I heard about it but I first saw it in game during the moon mission where my mind was already playing along with the lunacy and accepted the floating discs into the game. Maybe the ball would be alright if it was introduced in the right scenario.

100% Granted I was in my mid/late teens back then and was just blind to it and was obsessed with C&C though
