A list of the decent RTS between C&C and now that you (might have) missed.
"There haven't been any good RTS games in X years!"

I've seen this sentiment popping up time and time again and I gotta say: I'm a little disappointed, but not really surprised. Here's the thing: we have had decent RTS games for the last couple of decades. You just haven't noticed because RTS is no longer a genre that gains a lot of traction with the public, so they're not hugely advertised. Without the huge marketing push you have to go out of your way to find some of them, or hang in the right circles.

That said, Steam has a nifty function that lets you find RTS games via a pretty simple category. Slap in base building (or add "Action RTS") to remove all the RTT games and you've got a nifty list.

So in the interest of reminding you that we've gotten some new RTS games recently (and to hopefully contain all the random threads), I'm going to include a list of some of the releases you've presumably missed or forgotten. You might've seen me post it elsewhere, too.

2022: Dune: Spice Wars, Diplomacy is Not an Option, Crossfire: Legion (it's... okay), Beyond All Reason
2021: Five Nations (great little nostalgic gem), AoE4
2020: C&C Remastered, Iron Harvest, Spellforce 3: Fallen Gods
2019: AoE2: Definitive, Conan Unconquered
2018: Northgard, They Are Billions, AI War 2
2017: DoW3 (not great but still has some fun in it), Spellforce 3, SC: Remastered
2016: Ashes of the Singularity, Cossacks 3, AoM expansion, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak (super neat IMO), all the "8-bit" franchise of games.
2015: Grey Goo, Homeworld Remastered, Etherium, Act of Aggression (flawed but alright)
2014: Planetary Annihilation, Stronghold Crusader 2,
2013: Starcraft 2, More AoE2 stuff, CoH2,
2012-2009 you've got stuff like Stronghold 3, Sins of a Solar Empire, Dawn of War/DoW2, Supreme Commander, etc.

This doesn't include the more dubious stuff like Paradox games and Total War since those are more contentious despite technically fitting the criteria. I'm sure I've missed some, or suggested ones that aren't as satisfying, but hopefully my point has gotten across: the RTS genre hasn't been dormant all these years, you just haven't been following the genre. As I said, it's much smaller now, much more niche, but it's still there.

If you go even further back you get some hidden gems like Kingdom Under Fire (no, not the XBox stuff) and Armies of Exigo (setting itself up as the Stacraft-slayer it... uh... didn't make it, though honestly it was pretty creative) - as well as Earth 2160.

I just want C&C back. Everything else sucks. Except perhaps TR, if the campaign is good. Don't care for PvP.

Right! SC2 and DoW 3 kinda fills the gaps. I have no like for all this what they call 4X RTS.
