Is this game really IDLE?
Back when I played it, very long ago, it required a second life in order to play it.

How is it now?

I'd say it's a bit of both. You need to play actively to get the best results from the game but you also gain most of your levels and stats from idling.

Eh, I would say there are two ways of playing. Logging in once a day to collect passive bonuses and maybe leaving a character running for progression is one. Min/maxxing each and every toon for efficiency is another. Or you can do do the second once per week. The game is only as sweaty as you want it too be and that's what makes it a good idle game.
Its as active as you want it to be.
I can leave it running and check it not and then or close it and not care that much.

New warrior class requires a lot of active idle but you dont have to sit there and do anything.
The active element is a lot larger in recent updates. Offline gains are drastically slower than active player. Also some mechanics are impossible with offline play such as gaining bones for leveling up Beserker's 5th class as they can only be gained during online play and at an extremely slow rate, you'll need to leave your pc on for days gathering bones

Ouch. That hurts a lot! IDLE games need to consider people who can't have their pc on all the time
this is not really an idle game. it should be renamed.
You can totally offline f2p idle at reach the same point as everyone else, if you are not interested in breaking the limits of mechanics, you can casual all the way through. Think of active idle as a 'win more' mechanic for those who want to push the limits.

Even with the offline play there are some new skills that need a decent session to set up or tweak keep in mind. I am 80% an offline idle player. It is totally doable.

I like the way it is honestly, since it can be kinda min/maxed by being constantly active, if you dont feel like it you're not forced at all imo. And some talents actually boost afk gains anyways so I view as a plus since maybe I put in 2h at most every couple days and reached world 3 so far. It does have the negative point of having a lot of "micromanagement" so in that regard it is quite taxing, but if you play it sparingly like me, for a casual it's not a requirement.

you ae forced to active play quite alot
aka the game running in the background and eating resources and it does eat quite alot of that

it is more so AFK than Idle as Idle implies you are still there. You can play in the free to play way and the AFK parts will make more sense
