I don't consider them the same genre and have different audiences. i rarely have more than a couple of hours per day free so being able to keep up with even an average player in a classic MMORPG is always challenge, i also loose interest in games rather quickly especially when putting a huge amount of time into them.
Idleon lets me play for 30-40 minutes in the morning then forget about it while continuing with my normal day and still make progress. I don't feel like i'm loosing out much by not constantly playing.
Furthermore If i did want to become a more competitive hardcore player i could plan the 30 minutes i am on the game more carefully and only have to visit the game every so often spending in total maybe 2 hours active and keep up with higher levels without needing to actively play for 16+ hours per day which is a must in classical MMORPGS to be top.
Idleon is high complexity giving you the challenge itch but also understands some people have more commitments in life or online outside of a single MMO.
Idle games aren't for everyone but those are the reasons i love an idle game.
It tickles my brain trying to figure out how to get everything to work at a decent efficiency.
Then after Ive done that and reach a point where I hit a new wall, I have to roll my sleeves up and think of a new way to increase efficiency.
I enjoy theory crafting builds, testing things to see what works and what is giving more than other things.
I can "play" this game without investing too much of my time.
I can "Game" while doing some work.
I can watch something or listen to a podcast while I play.
I can eat and watch my divine knight do the skull arena.
I can get up and drink coffee while checking my stuff.
Then when I get tired of playing, I set my guys up to do something and come back in a few months when there's more to do and it doesn't feel like I've lost time.
Then, if I want some more hardcore gaming I'll just play something else.
This games number crunching and interactions work similarly to warframe. I try out builds there. People tell me I need invincibility to survive late game, but I just want to force my numbers to get high until it breaks anyways. I have unkillable builds, insta kill builds, 3x farming builds, map wide control builds.
This is something I play in between other games, this isnt something I sit down and HARDCORE game on, but the long form progression and relaxed nature is a good thing to break away from other games on and just feel progress come over time.
The best thing that keeps it alive though is the constant updates, the Dev puts in the work and is constantly adding things so it's nice to come back to it and check out the new content.
Some find it fun to try to optimise and find efficient ways of doing things. But like every MMO type game, this is a complete waste of your time. Just less massive waste of your time than sitting on WoW as ppl still do and would do in the past for 8-16 hours daily actively.
Let it cook.
Also lol @ buying auto pickup though 😭
For me its my inbetween game, When waiting for people to join in Apex or i need to kill a bit of time before leaving my house. I like the grind to be honest. Its just something to do, its Idle enough i dont stress but micromanage enough i enjoy the numbers.
