How to rank up in dungeons?

I seem to be stuck at rank 1.
I've made it up to the 4th Grandfrogger in the W1 dungeon a few times but i could never get past it.
Do I need to complete a dungeon to make progress towards ranking up?

At the end of dungeons, you click the dices, it gives you dungeon's money, exp and items as loot.

You don't have to complete a dungeon but you need the currency. The dungeon currency you collect is both a currency AND your xp for it. So every time you collect the blue C item you get dungeon xp. Mostly/easiest source are dungeons. But you can get them outside of dungeons. For example, in World 2 Killroy has dice for sale (that give dungeon currency and therefore xp), in World 3 a lot of quests have dice as rewards.

*you can spend the credits no problem, you just need to collect them to get xp
