Using keys

Is there ea simple way to use a key to open things? It seems as if sometimes a key works and then other times it won't open a door or drawer etc. I can't see what I am doing wrong as I highlight the key I want and then exit the tab screen and try to use the said key. Any suggestions welcomes. Thanks......
