The mulch upgrades are really good. If you already have all of the mulch upgrades, there probably isn't much more you can use it for, but that happens to all resource types eventually.
It doesn't really unlock anything (like basically every other shop), it doesn't lead in to anything (like the Coins Shop which prepares you for all your early game automation, and makes literally every part of the game easier thanks to Upgrade Discount), it doesn't unlock anything (like the huge number of things in the BLC/MLC Shop), and getting more mulch doesn't even make getting more mulch easier (the Mulch Marketing upgrade is fairly worthless).
Its 'claim to fame' is pretty much the trade bonuses which ARE nice but... lots of things give trade bonuses. Or, maybe, it's seed bonuses except you could say the same thing about all the Offline Seed upgrades and seed spawn upgrades. The chest bonuses don't help until you get MUCH further in the game (same with the card upgrades, or even the trade upgrades in a way, and the claw/curse bonuses don't come into play until you have the cheese to spend on the Pub games). So some of the better upgrades don't even matter when you first unlock Mulch.
It's a resource you spend for a lot of random (which is not a bad thing) upgrades, then you forget about it until you need it for the Pyramid, then you forget about it entirely.
Meanwhile, even when you stop wanting leaves for upgrades you still want them for trading/prestige/ascension. When you stop wanting Coins, you come back to them for Orb farming. You don't stop wanting those resources TOTALLY, just momentarily or actively, just letting them do their own thing.
there's multiple upgrades i would suggest people farm to unlock as soon as they unlock mulch. i think that makes it a good resource. these arent in a specific priority, but they are insanely strong upgrades, and they persist through MLCs
1. Insert More Mulch (more items in claw machine)
2. Mulched Claw (not necessary, but cheap and very useful to grab the rare items like chests or community leaves)
3. Cursed Pub (easiest source of curses)
4. All of the trade upgrades (obviously good)
5. Craft Hammer (crafted leaves very important for progression)
6. Leaf Counter Macro (at least one point, but i suggest all 5 because its cheap)
8 important upgrades for progression as soon as you unlock mulch is very nice. eventually mulch stops being very important to gather but i dont really see it as an issue to care about

buy some things while trading and whatnot
