It used to be that your only way was to just leave the game crunching constantly (actually, to do it all yourself manually because auto crunching didn't exist). Artifacts, Offline BLC, and things like digging/crafted leaf bonuses/etc all got added and made things a lot easier.
I'm not exactly sure what's faster for hitting 1e13/10 trillion BLC Coins, but I BELIEVE that shovelling doesn't help when it comes to specifically farming Orbs (it's great in general while doing literally everything else though, and yes it's definitely good for helping you get all the Science shop BLC bonuses). The reason for this is that it resets the time-to-spawn of every artifact, where as you want just the Orbs to be getting reset.
Maxing out a single BLC then letting your Offline BLC upgrades give you the rest (especially if you've got the Gem Shop upgrades as well as the BLC Shop upgrades) is much easier than it used to be.
It IS an idle game.
I could probably do it fast staying idle in the volcano if I bothered to prestige and rebuild fruit trees to a reasonable level, but I'm lazy and don't like it running on my computer all day.
I definitely don't play this game as an idle game haha
