Sword not working on player character

When I equip the Sword on ALBs and the Player only the ALBs make mulch. If I deactivate ALBs and have the Player with the sword no mulch gets produced.

It's a bug. It has been around since the latest update (presumably caused by the new addition of splitting tool options for player/ALBs). There's no fix.

On the other hand, using the Sword to get mulch is... not exactly worth it. At all. So don't stress too much over it, and just trade for mulch instead. Saves yourself a lot of trouble.

My ALBs won't equip the swords, they are perpetually blowing leaves around no matter what I equip. Is it a bug or am I missing something?

Did you buy the ALB Tools upgrade in the BLC Shop? If that's the case, you should double check it, as it's off by default and need to be toggled on.
Another possible issue is that if you use the 'Equip' button instead of clicking on the player icon it will try to equip that tool on both your character and your ALBs and if the tool you're trying to equip is a trout, you ALB will end up with no tool equiped.
