Is there a way to find Jorn alive, if so how do you go about it?

I heard it's supposed to be possible if you just play the main story, I hope that's not true?

That's true, you cannot complete any side quest. ANY side quest.
Guild Reputation quests are all allowed because of progression
Even entering the city the wrong way will invalidate your run.
