some things to try:
1) check files integrity in steam (right click on the game > properties)
2) install the game on another hard drive
3) update drivers or check if some drivers got updated recently
4) if you use spine or have other mods installed on Archolos, try removing them
5) if you use antivirus, disable it
6) did you try restarting the pc?
7) if you can at least start the game to the main menu, try changing all the settings
8) try deleting the savegames folder for a moment and launch the game, of course make a backup of your saves before
Note: Quicksaving only works if you enabled it in Gothic.ini and has the shortcut F5.
1. Rename the entire game folder and download a clean copy.
2. Test if the game runs. If it does, move your savegames into it and try again.
3. If it works, try load into the game.
4. If it works, you can try adding DX11 in. The version might matter.
Whenever you are trying a new install you need to remember to clean up all manual leftovers from the folder, which is why renaming the whole folder is a good way to have a full backup.
Access Violation tends to be because this game writes to very specific memory addresses. 32 bit games are restricted to specific memory spaces and can't see outside if you have more RAM.
There is a universal 4gb patch that allows 32-bit applications to use full 4gb of RAM, becuase old games could only use 2gb because the other 2gb were reserved for the system. You can try use this on the Gothic executables in your game folder (the patch program makes its own backups, so no need to do it yourself).

I got an 'Access Violation' error that still persisted even after reinstalling the game; I don't have any save files either.
According to what i found apparently in 2022 some windows services got an update and changed settings in DEP (Data exploit protection). a windows internal service
Fixing Access Violation errors on launch:
1. Go to Windows 10 settings > Exploit protection > Program settings
2. Add a program > Enter "Gothic2.exe"
3. Scroll to "Data Execution Prevention (DEP)" and check "Override..."
4. Set it to "Off"
5. Launch the game!
This fixed it for me, dont thank me. I just found it somewhere else and wanted to add it here too :)
I'll thank you anyway. I tried other solutions but that's the only one that helped :)
