Linux - game does not start
I'm on Ubuntu Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and I am using Proton 6.3-7
When I hit the Play button, Steam shows that Age of Empires 4 is running, but the game does not open.
Please help.

Main reason I havent swapped to Linux is because game compatibility is still off.

Proton experimental?
Pepino Oct 29, 2021 @ 1:58am
On Proton experimental after klicking on Play it tries to start the game, shows for a few seconds that it is running and then the Play button becomes green again.

There is a github ticket regarding Age Of Empires IV compatibility:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5258

any info/support you could provide on github would help push this along. 2 places of note are:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5258
and

Thank you for the links!
On Protondb a lot of people have the same issue:

With today's proton update it works fine with Proton experimental now!

For those still looking for a fix. Figured some stuff out.
- Proton-6.20-GE-1 works without issue with the latest vkd3d
https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/issues/880

If you're having trouble compiling you could use https://github.com/frogging-family/dxvk-tools to download and compile the dll's.
Basically you have to copy the x64 and x86 d3d12.dll's you compiled over to the proton prefix folder of AOE4. should be:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1466860/pfx/drive_c/windows/system32/
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1466860/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64/

- If you are switching from proton experimental to Proton-6.20-GE-1 the game might stop launching.
You have to delete AOE4's proton prefix folder "$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1466860".
After that switch back to Proton-6.20-GE-1 and let steam configure it again. Dont forget to copy over the d3d12.dll's

- And if you have Sync issues:
install the package cabextract and then:

cd $HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1466860/pfx/drive_c/windows/system32
wget https://download.microsoft.com/download/9/3/F/93FCF1E7-E6A4-478B-96E7-D4B285925B00/vc_redist.x64.exe
sudo cabextract vc_redist.x64.exe
sudo cabextract a10
sudo chown -R $USER:$USER .

Must be incompatible hardware or a virus software installed or the like that is blocking it from starting, nothing wrong with Windows 10 compatibility.
