Suggestions For Good Starting Area
Most discussions on this topic were pre release of early access so theres a lot of speculative suggestions that are terrible in practice. For example, islands (hordes can traverse water), military bases that don't appear or do as one large building, ext. I've also noticed that a good base area might not be on a good map for resources and looting.

Does anyone have a solid all around area to suggest. One with preferably good resource and looting zones? Also does the game know what parts of the world have more guns than others, if any at all? Will i find more guns in random homes in Kentucky than i will Beijing?

So i have been trying out a few spots. My favorite one so far has been New York City, while it is a very high population so you will have tons of infected to deal with, the resources are plentiful. Better yet, set your HQ in a tall building and once you get snipers they can protect so much of your area.

I found more fuel/guns in S.W. Bakersfield, Ca than I did in the South Los Angeles cities. It might be RNG but maybe not.

The default Atlanta spot is pretty good. Tight cluster of buildings to expand into. There is a huge amount of clay and wood nearby as well as some larger buildings to deconstruct for a steady income of wood, metal and bricks. There is also a nearby highschool to loot for a ton of science points and plenty of open space across from initial HQ for farming.

I've been really enjoying Washington D.C. There is a TON of resources, I stopped looting because I'm around day 60 now with nearly 200 people, with a self sustaining base (except for damn wood) and have 300+ food, 100+ weapons, pretty much everything I need. And I haven't even looted half the map. Maybe a third of it?

My starting HQ was at 5th street northeast 1271, I was able to wall in the whole block with only 9 walls and 3 gates.

for me i like to play not in city(the level difficulty is to high but high risk high return is not work here yet(every swarm is getting harder and harder)
get smaller area with alot of small house for deconstruction(farming area)
find the area with the books icon everywhere at least u can cover for weapon, defense, food
but no matter what u do the limit might at days 40+

damn woods is always the problem as always, also each 10 days the swarm is coming like crazy the horde is add 2 each 10 days make it like from splash of glass water to a bucket of water in matter of 5 swarm

With UK areas I'm finding any where residential just on the outskirts of a towns highstreet works best, as typically you're going to get a nicely spaced row collection of lootable homes with sprinkles of schools and food shops within walking distance of your starting point.

Doing more condensed town/city centres sounds good in theory for all the "Good loot" spots, but in reality few of such things seem to really translate into the game itself, and what you end up with is a tightly packed limited line of sight mess with a lot of generic "This was a pharmacy in real life but now it's a council estate flat with yet another 300 rounds of ammo", with the area taking you well beyond the point of save game corruption time just to clear space out to do anything sensible with.

It's especially bad considering the whole resource ratios are out of whack at the moment and trees are probably the most valuable resource in the game, where as demolishing buildings for resources is the least practical thing you can ever do unless you already have the warehouse capacity to store enough bricks to make 50 great walls of China.
