Warehouse Inventory Exchange and Disposal
Even though I have a truckload of more than enough canned food, my people are going to starve to death because my warehouse is full -- cluttered by bricks and steel. At the same time, I cannot build new warehouses because I cannot store wood because the warehouses are full. So my population just keeps dying.

In general I think it is a problem that as soon as something gets stored in a warehouse, you can't get it out again into a squad's inventory. Ideally the squad should at least be able to grab something from a warehouse. Furthermore, it would be good if we could select unwanted stockpile to dispose of.

I agree, Inventory management needs an overhaul. Ran into this last night, had two warehouses full and two tuck loads of food I couldn't unload. I would say more inventory space, or a resource pile outside that workers can pull from. Doesn't make sense to me to store brick, metal, and wood with the food and ammo.

Yep same thing here, i am in the process of building a warehouse but it's super slow because my current warehouse is full and i have to just wait for food and ammo to be consumed to free up space for wood

Not being able to remove clutter in your inventory is a huge oversight in my opinion
Also not being able to take harvested recourses from the world instead of only from the warehouse is kinda infuriating.
You could have it so that recourses left out from gathering because storage is full are prone to being attacked by the zombies to add a risk of leaving them out in the open

also i would like it if every category (building materials, food, medicine, weaponry) had it's own storage that way extra bricks wont stop you from storing food.

So at a certain point, it appears you just run out of space, and your squads won't unload?

I found abandoning the squad and then starting it again would add it to my inventory anyway.

so far, game is jank

There is likely a bug that is causing this warehouse problem; I have noticed playing my map twice that something I've done has broken a resource and caused it to clog up the entire warehouse stock. Like an inexplicable deposit of 3000 wood that is 100% impossible for me to have gathered such an amount. So no matter how much I manage my resource intake, how many warehouses I build (the bugged resource simply increases and blocks space again), or how many palisades/houses I build to use up the wood, it never reduces enough to free space for food and ammo

Stupid workaround :: build brick walls. Bricks are an uncontested resource and walls get them out of your inventory at a decent rate. Since you can shoot through walls they are (probably) great for placing around the outer three sides of guard towers, placing on the far sides of expensive metal walls and generally funneling the infected into kill zones.

I'm propagating this advice from observations on various youtube pre-release video play-throughs. ...

We're working on a feature to discard resources.

Better yet, should there be potential trading with other zones found from expeditions?

Discarding resources is like putting a bandaid on a missing limb. Technically helps, I suppose.

So to re-summarize what "discard resources" means in the current build... "go ahead and use your workers and limited daytime hours to gather bricks (mostly) and metal with some wood, when in reality the only resource you need early-mid game is wood, and definitely all you need late game.

The 'feature' we need are toggles/controls on the warehouses that allow us to limit the maximum amount of a resource the workers can deposit. Otherwise, imagine if you will, watching a swarm of a workers ripping a building down because you've already clearcut eight city blocks... knowing that 2 out of 3 workers heading back to your warehouse are depositing materials you 100% know you're going to delete as soon as they are deposited.

Love the game by the way, but the solution is two fold in my opinion.

1) toggles on the warehouse of what can or can't be deposited and/or maximums of each item

2) a "recycling" center that produces "cardboard" or "crates" that can replace lumber requirement for food and farming. Basically, once it's built and researched you get empty crates for each unit of food produced or consumed that needs to be "cleaned and processed" which basically means the same labor you would spend collecting wood is a new building with labor requirements you need to balance and manage without the frustration of having to rip apart buildings when wood is the only resource you need...

I know, but that's something we can do quickly. Other solutions will need to wait until we deal with the biggest problems at hand.

This solution worked best for me, and I recommend people do so in case they face the same problem as me.

Essentially, the Exchange button on a squad can be used to either exchange the inventories of a squad and a building, or exchange both inventory and personnel between two squads. After clicking the Exchange button, just click another squad/building, and the exchange interface will open after the squad arrives at the other squad/building. Drag and pull items and personnel to exchange once the interface opens.

I'm selecting this as the best answer to my question and overriding the developer choice because I think this might be of better immediate help. Appreciate developers' attention to this problem as well! If you want to see developers' responds, see posts #7 and #10.
