From very good to very bad...
I would like to share some of my impressions. I loved the game at first. I really did. But the more the game goes, the more becomes annoying and bad. In later stage. there is too many enemy spawns. Extrelemy many. They broke all my gates and towers and of course next morning my workers fix nothing. Because they are very slow obviously. Despite the fact I had all tools, they fixed nothing even in full numbers. So gues what happens next night? So my lovely game turned into a very bad and annoying experience. Workers fix way too slow. Enemy spawns way too much and too often in huge numbers. So my very good experience turned into a very bad experience I would say. Devs maybe think its fun like this. But its not. It just annoyed me perfectly. From perfect to bad. What a shame. Its just a beta I know. But I just wanted to share my dissapointment. Lets see how it goes further.

Well don't want to sound rude but you do not provide much to go on.

A gate can be repaired completely in a day IF all resources are available and if it is in a decently close vicinity of the nearest warehouse/HQ.
Because for each resource they use to repair of build the building they will take it to the site, use it up and then go back to the building site and use it up.
If your new gate, wall, building is fairly far away it can take quite a while for a building to be finished.(Gate is also a building in this regard.)

The trick is in this game it is not really about building huge fortifications, because that does not work in most maps. Especially on maps where certain resources (usually metal) is scarce. (Other resources can be scarce too, if there are barely any lootable buildings).

Tools are not used to enhance working speed, like in other games, but they are required to build certain buildings. Like greenhouses, barns, and a few other such things.
If you have tools you can build them, if you do not you cant.

So i would say that you probably have a few misconceptions about the game.

As i said huge fortifications are not really the way to go, especially early on.
The trick is to get a few cars, get a few squads and have them all armed.
Then you can have cars that can distract a swarm, or parts of the swarm allowing you to deal with as many hordes as you can conveniently handle.
Also it is not the gates or the watchtowers that will be your main damage dealers, but those guys in the HQ or in Warehouses.
Why? simple. Access to bullets.
Only those within a warehouse of HQ can replenish their ammo. Anyone else shoots away all their bullets and they are now non range units. You can give every squad 4 extra ammo, but during certain nights they can go through 3-4 clips easily. Especially if you use assault rifles.

There are certain ways to play the game. They are not mutually exclusive neither.
OkOk for instance focuses quite heavily on melee, whereas i abstain as much as possible, then there is a player who makes rows upon rows of barbed wire(sorry dude cant recall your name:P).

So try a few times more and try to occasionally have a look and figure out what is wrong, what you should have done differently.
For instance i research things in a certain way, i expand my base in a certain way, i start to produce ammo around day 30, thereafter around day 40 i am producing fuel as well.
Food production is already up (meat based food!) at around day 45.
And by these times i have swarms that have over 2 dozen hordes and an alpha:)
Hell around day 80 i sometimes get two swarms on the same day. And i can manage. No buildings destroyed beside occasionally one or two brick walls. But that is it.
And i cant even utilize the repair workstation as last i played it was bugged and the workers there did not do a thing.

All in all, i think you need to play a bit more and gain experience and then you will realize your mistakes. For some of us this challenge is enjoyable, if not for you try to check a few guides that were made recently or ask for tips here on the forum.
Also if you provide your starting map we can even point out what could be a useful strategy there.

i think the game must focus on multiplayer, and think on something to player do instead of only keep gathering resources, building fence and killing infinites hordes
for repairs make a warehouse close to problem areas so travel time is reduced for repair materials. Housing placement also a key point, having houses spread out could drastically reduce the time it takes at least 1 worker to get to a repair site.

I think hordes are necessary otherwise the game would be boring, but frequency i agree is far to much, Personal wish list juggernaut armour , mini guns ,rpg and ammo trucks to fend off hordes while repairs are made.

I only played on low pop, low resource max horde/swarm settings.
On this setting, at the start sometimes you have a tougher time than when the first swarm comes. On my first night in my current game i have been attacked almost simultaneously by 9 hordes. Random roamers. Was ridiculous. Required me to use the cars quite extensively.
Later on from around day 10 or 20...swarms come every single night unless the moon is full. If the sun does not shine too brightly you can even get 2 swarms on the same day later on. And these swarms easily can have 40 hordes and an alpha.
Around day 87 i had in one game 42 horde strong swarm with 1 alpha.

Well, as it turned out, you are right. I just found out in a video, you can just use shift+RMB to plan scavenging of buildiings with your squads. This feature extremely helped my planning and I became much stronger and my fortress is now very very strong. And Im enjoying the game once again. But other problem now appeared. I need now organs of the Alpha. But the problem is, since my fortress became extremy strong and safe, no Alpha attacked on me since. How can I summon him? Even those waves of hordes are gone. Like everybody is scared now or something.
alpha come at random but usaully with each hord, but check ur inv for the organ. ive had it where a alpha was attcking my hq( i use em like bunkers) and when the alpha died, a squad very adjacent picked it up(proximity, No "pick up organ button needed) and stored it in the building. Who knows u might already have the organs.

Im experiencing a bug probably. The Alpha and even the swarm hordes dont appear at all. They ddint appear in 40 years. From 230 to 270 cca. I have sent my men around the city, on expeditions, but nothing. Only few night attacks I get. But those attacks are quite weak.

Cant help you with that.
I did not build the radio:) That means endless swarms every night:D
(Never knew that the swarm and alpha attack will stop if you progress with the radio and the events:D)
So i have no organ and no need to vaccinate neither. I just need to focus on the swarms that come every night. Sometimes twice:)

edit: the organ bug i definetly read about earlier on the forums, some folks reporting it.
edit2: good thing you managed to overcome the hindrances that made you not enjoy the game.
