E.g. In the game it takes roughly an hour (game time) to cover about 1 km (or .6 miles) on foot. For reference, the average walking speed of an adult is roughly 3 miles/hour.
It takes a few hours to travel to the next community by vehicle, which is roughly 2 km (1.2 miles) to 3 km (1.8 miles) from center to center.
So this distended travel time gives the impression that the map is big.
It's about 2 miles, haven't measured exact, but playing from 'home' seems to be about that before I reach the 'border', which I know in real life would take me 20 minutes to get to on a relaxed walk.
However, when you choose the place (like your country), it will show whole regions which is many miles or kilometers, then you narrow it down to exactly where you are which is about a 2-4 mile square.
Also an advantage of this is you get to see much more detail of the local area, so if you want to place your HQ in your house, you can pretty much make the HQ your house or a couple of houses that include your house and zoom down quite close. You need that detail for the immersion since you will literally see some places you recognise and are named correctly too!
Also if your city is reasonably dense, you'll be surprised just how much there is about you. You won't be stuck for stuff to explore for a good while.
So I like that the range is closer.
That said a slightly longer range would be nice, yet still allowing a closer zoom, since there's a couple of places I would've liked to explore that are just out of range that i could walk easy in real life, although I'm not having to duck zombies, granted.
