I took out all of that frustration by using the cheats and giving myself assault rifles. Thats it nothing else not even bullets because pistols will not cut it. Just use the tilde key above the tab button then click the ? mark until they fix the overwhelming hordes then you'll be able to play and have fun.
I'm into day 60 with wooden walls, and metal walls on the interior, most swarms hit places in my walls covered by two towers, plus usually a squad in a building and only the wood has been breached a couple of times, the metal is untouched currently. I attribute that mainly to my mobile defense force of squads in cars.
They bring however many squads you have cars for anywhere in your base in seconds, be careful but they run over infected (this damages the vehicles) and best of all they draw attention, I kite probably 90% of the infected away from the walls and into crossfires between towers and vehicles, and I run over probably 20%-40% of the infected depending on group sizes.
Just like in real life when faced by a superior force to stand and fight is almost always a death sentence, while mobility and guerrilla tactics will win you the day. Or at least get you to sunup barring any storms.
Damn :(
I THINK it's a bug because it's such a huge jump in swarm numbers overnight. They adjusted the swarm difficulty in the last patch and this seems like a bug from that.
One workaround could be that whenever player loses X buildings, increase the swarm cooldown by Y nights. Maybe even decrease the swarm size too? That would give player chance to repair/rebuild/adapt, which in itself can be very challenging depending on resource situation.

You do realize, a squad with 4 aussault rifles is more efficient, than a tower, right? People level up, towers don't.
The screenshot I posted above was after I defended against 3 swarms of ~400 infected with a pop of ~140. The 4th swarm killed me, because I could not repair all the buildings in a day before the 4th swarm came in.
I had 11 squads with Aussault Rifles and all the people were rank 2 or 3. Still, 2 Alphas leading in 400 Infected results in a 4k HP building beeing instantly deletet.
Killboxes don't work either, because often times, Infected just swarm at the nearest location and don't use a "open way in".
I tried leaving a spot open in the wall and the Infected didn't care, they just ran into a cornerbuilding and tried to swarm it.
Micromanaging a couple of groups around is totally fine and you can bait some Infected with a squad, but with 400 alphabuffed Infected 4 nights in a row, you just can't manage it at day 50. And I did no crank up the horde size to max.
As I said: before the patch, I reached day 120 on very hard and it was a breeze. ~80-100 Infected at once was like max swarm size every week or so. Totally doable.
Now: It's way over the top^^
I encountered 4 times that amount (100 hordes and 4 alphas) and survived.
Read all my posts and understand the situation. I know how to play the game. I even did the "survive on very hard" archievement and I have multiple savegames with over 100 days and unbeatable bases pre-patch. They changed something and those hordes were 20 infected per icon. Thats more than 400 Infected. Not 100. 100 is not a big deal. Over 400 with 1-2 Alphas EVERY NIGHT for 4 NIGHTS IN A ROW is a porblem.
