They are talking abou the small playable area, you can't play in the whole city of NY in one save file for example.
You need buildings to support the game so the game preventing someone from picking places that have too few is doing you a favor.
I have also played at safeco Field in seattle, The people's palace in Bucharest and an Island off the coast of California.

This is what I've done. My point still stands. The grid you are given is actually very small and it's impossible to "Play in any city" as most towns won't even fit into the grid, let alone any city. Map should be at least 4x bigger. Would be better if Infected started inside buildings or in parts of the town/city/urban areas rather than spawning from the edges of the map also. Feels like an elaborate tower defence game but with 90% of the things locked behind options. It feels like absolutely nothing new was changed or added since the Demo release several months ago. Genuinely curious what the devs are doing with their time.
Games still in development mate, half the buildings and research options that we even have are still in development.
hell they only recently added the ability to save games
its not really false, while the grid might be a little small, you are still playing within whatever city you chose.... with the game being in alpha it's pretty darn solid and i was impressed to pull up my own town and see landmarks and streets that im familiar with.
The fact is that the game allows to select any place around the world.
Yeah, OK, you cannot play in ALL New-York city in the version 0.23 but...... it's still undergoing development. Claiming that "play in any city" is false is unrelevant and... false.
You are claiming that despite the fact that the studio already developed games that truly permits to play in any city of any size.
Go buy some kindness, some patience too, see what the studio already developed and think twice before claiming something is false about an undergoing development game.
Acting so rudely does not help in any way.
But for the other point no, you can play where you want, i try a lot, yes big city, big problem for now ... or not, Paris Montmartre was fine, even Sacré Coeur great render and some other things need better designation on the oppenstreet (like bridge or was consider as building).
But we all pay for a pre alpha, don't complain or ask the moon in the first week, be more constructive in your post ;)
Yeah I found in both my home towns there were sections I wanted to start in but they were just outside of the grid and placing the grid so that they were included, meant other parts were not.
@GodlyJohn yes it's in Alpha but it seems the "Expeditions" feature is already semi planned out - the grids are 9 squares and every square outside of it has a disabled "Expedition" overlay. Given how dangerous it gets, I assume we won't be given control of Squads to go and explore these extra squares, it will probably be some "Mission" thing where they disappear for a month or so and then come back with a bunch of loot. I think it would be 10x more immersive and fun if the current map size was expanded to be 8x larger - the same 9 square grid but expanded on every side. Having the ability to barricade houses or make makeshift defences would be awesome and then you could plan your own manually controlled expedition to far corners of the much larger map. Atm once you have a car, the entire 9 squares and all the default space becomes trivial to traverse. I can imagine it's even more trivial once you reach over 100 survivors or more! I'm just not hopeful about the map size changing due to the "Expeditions" seemingly already in place
No need for CAPS, i just say it was alpha in the message you quote ;)
But this is pre early access. This is like the alpha for the beta before early access launch lol
I wouldn't mind if it is incorporated like other city building games, like you select your initial area, "same size as now" and the squares around you on the map can be purchased, maybe using research points and other goods as a bribe. Like another survivor group has claim to the region and you contact them and "pay them" in supplies for the additional region.
Than it becomes part of your playable area and you can build there etc.
It would all need programming and testing etc, and prob can wait because the devs have so much more they are already discussing and working on.
That's like late game sim city after the basics are all big free etc
