Has Final Fantasy ever had a female main antagonist besides Ultimecia?
{This was officially confirmed in the 1997 Kaitai Shinsho guide and the Ultimanias years later. The former refers to the Jenova parts Sephiroth controls/manifests through as the "Sephiroth Illusion," and states he was responsible for it as well as manipulating the Sephiroth copies/clones (which is outright stated in the game).}
That connection can be brought into a physical form, easily.
I've never been on the side of Sephiroth in control of Jenova and have always believed it was in control of him.
I mean, he was injected with Jenova cells while in the womb of Lucrecia. This idea that he was able to override Jenova seems like pure marketing bologna to me as Sephiroth is far more marketable than Jenova.
No, this is exactly why they ret conned the hell out of the rivalry, with the time travel woo hoo. I do get that much.
It's just that the part I posted from the source, showed they feel he controls her, jenova is in actuality, his puppet.
Is it really time travel? Chrono Trigger is time travel, but Remake? I've never really seen it. Maybe Rebirth will confirm the sequel ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ people are convinced of.
Jenova is basically a parasite who uses Sephiroth as its host. Keep in mind that meteor and using the lifestream to absorb in order to become a god was Jenova's plan, not Sephiroth's. Sephiroth only changed after he learned Jenova was his "mother." But we all know that isn't really true. It's almost like some sort of switch was suddenly flicked and Jenova took over his personality.
Yeah, and it's certainly possible, because sometimes those guides are full of nonsense and non-canon lore.
Again, being that case, him, changing to a her, is totally possible.
Also, his eyes. After he switches, his eyes change to cat-like eyes. That to me is an indication of something activating inside of him, like Jenova's cells and influence.
What I want from at least one of these games is more on Jenova and the Cetra. How they managed to beat it. You can get that info from Cosmo Canyon in the OG, so I hope they go into even more detail in Rebirth.
Agreed.
Yeah, and I read someone else isn't directing this time, and that's got me a bit less nervous about the story this time around at the very least. Since I'm still having trouble actually finishing, this one..

There is also Kefka, that is just... Kefka.
Seph was a woman in the original draft. And with the ammount of Jenova cells inserted in the womb while he was being gestated, making even more sense for him to be born a female.
It was changed because of what you pointed out: Marketable. But the world has changed, just think of Nier: Automata 2B and how amazing her moves looks.
Besides, it would create much more tension between Seph and Aerith and Cloud: FF7 is a weird love triangle story where Seph doesn't love Aerith, he is just obsessed with her being a Cetra. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the strongest Soldier ever being a female - it's a fantasy game and Seph was infected in the womb with Alien DNA from Jenova.
But the suits took the decision to make him a male dressed in S&M outfit because it sells more toys this way. Besides, Seph is a "Warrior" while Ultimecia as a "Witch", so it's easier to sell her as a villain. But if you notice Cloud's obsession with Seph, it borders a romantic relationship. I think that the "bro culture" of the time said "The Final Fight of the Game is gonna be between a man and a girl? So lame!".
Just close your eyes and picture how much more interesting would be for Seph to be a woman from the start - from the Soldier years, to the One Winged Angel form.
2B is awesome because Nier Automata was made by a talented developer who knew how to make great action games. Bayonetta is another example. But 2B doesn't have the same appeal as she's pretty dull compared to Sephiroth.
I'm firmly in the belief that it isn't Sephiroth that wants Aerith - the last remaining Ancient dead - it's Jenova. Remember, Jenova was defeated by the Cetra and sealed away. Makes perfect sense it would target them again when one is still alive as they're the last line of defense against it, outside of the weapons.
Cloud isn't really obsessed with Sephiroth. He has PTSD from what Sephiroth did to his hometown, and he's made well aware that he's trying to destroy the planet, so he does his best to stop it from happening.
No. I completely disagree Sephiroth would be more interesting as a female. He was written to be a man and that's how he should stay in official works going forward. A spin off story by another developer where in another timeline, he is female? Sure. That's fine.
Uh.... Final Fantasy XIII?
Barthandelus wasn't female.
He was actually written to be a woman. You can google that.
Cloud is CLEARY obsessed with Seph, he has always been. Seph was a ROCKSTAR Soldier: everyone wanted to be like him. And if you recall Cloud and Tifa childhood scenes, she mentions "All boys leave town" and he talks about "He wanting to leave to become a Soldier, just like Seph, and he would not come back until he achieved that."
When he did come back, he hid his face under his Shinra Infantry helmet in shame because he was an underachiever, and never got to be a Soldier. I don't think he has PTSD at all: he clearly suffers from disassociation, delusions of grandeur and is clearly a narcisist who only cares about himself - even in the child scenes: he doesn't accept who he is, and he got a mental breakdown due to the heavy mako exposition in the end of Crisis Core -where he literally stole Zack's identity, weapon and clothes. The Airship speech, where he comes clean after remembering, he is candid in saying "I did not want to be who I was, so it was easy for me to fall into the illusion that I was an elite soldier."
The end of Crisis Core, where Zack fights until his death, and during Crisis Core, you see he is WAY STRONGER than Cloud is at the start of FF7 OG - in the train voyage with Sephiroth and Zack, before that, Seph kills a dragon with one hit.
And Japanese culture is sexist on itself and shows it in the game:
Who is the leader of Avalanche? A man.
Who is the leader of Shinra? A man.
Who is the leader of the Turks? A man.
Who are the "Greatests Soldiers"? Men.
Who is the "Ancient Sage"? A man.
Who runs Gold Saucer? Men.
Who builds the rocket while being extremely abusive with his female assistant? A man.
It's japanese culture for you, in the 90's: You have women that dress like sluts, and women that are princess and don't show their ankles.
Final Fantasy X-2 got so many bad reviews just because the whole cast were composed of females. Just look at Capcom Games from the 90's: big breasts, semi naked girls all the way.
Doesn't matter how he was originally written. He was officially written as a man. Simple as that.
Having a role model does not mean obsession. It means you look up to that person and want to aspire to be like them - plus he was young, and young boys usually have a role model. That isn't anything close to obsession.
His town was destroyed. His mother was murdered. His best friend almost got murdered. He watched another of his friend's get shot to death. Also, he has flashbacks to the burning of Nibelheim that makes him shake with shock. That's a sign of PTSD.
Japanese culture has always been like that. Women were sexy, and the men were sexy. It's never been any different and people love them for it.
No, FFX-2 got trashed because it was poorly written and badly designed from a character perspective. Yuna went from a shy young woman, to a short shorts gun toting flirt after 10, and it didn't work well for her at all.
So, basically what you're saying is you have a problem with men being in too many powerful roles. Sucks for you then.
