Plates above Midgar
I can't help but wonder, whose bright idea was it to design Midgar with giant metal plates above the entire population? If even one piece of debris falls from up top, it's a huge hazard, letalone an entire plate on a sector. Why were there so little people who thought it was a bad idea? How is there even one person who thinks it's a good idea (for example, that one idiot at the beginning of chapter 3 who called it "progress")?

There are so many design flaws and safety issues with how MIdgar is built that it bothers me how any of it was approved and accepted in the first place.

It's all dirty poor people living under the plates, all that matters is they keep paying those electric bills.

Have you seen the name of the game yet?

And entire population lives ON the plate. Below are slums and trash heaps.

Not sure whether you are just trying to be funny, or asking for lore reason why it is the way it is.

Under the plate is the slums.
Most people living up top look down on the poor people in the slums.

What i didn´t really get about the plates in FF is (need to spoil a bit):

Why is there an emergency plate seperation system on every pillar around Midgar ?

For when you no longer need / care about the people living on the plate nor the ones below.

It might be because they had the walls for safety from monsters and other people and a base set of structures, utilities, etc. and so they just built upwards. It actually is a terrible idea and wasn't working out as they wanted which is why they wanted to do Neo Midgar project which involves rebuilding a completely new Midgar (the white demo one seen in Shinra presentation when at Shinra building) and use the abundant mako energy acquired from the Promised Land, hence Cetra/Ancients, to power it and make a superior utopia, aka money machine.

The slums under the plates are literally just a big garbage dump/sewer that poor people, and criminals took up residence in. Probably was never originally planned to be populated. We only see the real Midgar city twice during the whole game a little at the start, and then a little during the Jessie mission.
