However, this is NOT the whole story. This is just one part of a three part trilogy retelling the original 1997 game's story.
So, generally speaking, any of the "mainline numbered" Final Fantasy games are stand alone games. Meaning, you don't need to play III to play IV or X.
In this particular case, Remake is debatably a gray area among people that really understand the lore. And it would be my personal recommendation to also play the original FFVII (preferably before this). However, this game was designed to be playable for someone that never played the nearly three decade old original. It has stuff for returning fans, and it is a functionally coherent story for newcomers.
If you want to give it a go, it is a pretty good story driven action RPG, with a rather unique combat system that I haven't been able to quite find anywhere else (I sort of thought maybe "Tales of" series could be a comparison point, but, not really). And I would recommend this game.
If you want to compare it to FFXII, I would say this is much more linear, with tighter story pacing. XII was more about setting up your party to play autonomously with the Gambit system, here there is a lot more active management in combat. XII was more about field exploration, where this is more combat, story, and character interaction. They are rather different. IMO both good, but this is much more polished and didn't so clearly suffer from the development woes that XII did.
Suffice to say, this is a good game with a neat story. If you like it, there will be two more games in this trilogy.
